Toby Keith Movies
Born in Clinton, OK, in 1961,
Toby Keith grew up on a farm just outside Oklahoma City and took to the guitar before he reached the age of nine, growing proficient with remarkable speed and efficiency. As a young man, he worked the oil fields to support himself and formed a musical act patterned after
Alabama, the Easy Money Band, but his primary gig fell through when the oil market entered a slump, forcing him to look elsewhere. He spent a two-year stint as a semipro football player, then opted to focus his time and energy on launching his musical career, eventually landing a contract with Mercury.
Keith's first seven recordings (which witnessed him gravitating from Mercury to Polygram to A&M to DreamWorks) sold fairly well, but his 2002 album Unleashed (which contained "The Angry American," his response to the events of September 11) pushed him over the top and made him a household name. He received some of the best notices and highest figures of his career for his successive recordings.
Cinematically speaking, most of
Keith's on-camera appearances up through 2005 were performance-related, but in 2006 he branched out into acting with a lead (opposite
Kelly Preston in the sentimental rural drama
Broken Bridges) playing a country and western star who revisits his hometown for a funeral and falls back in love with an old girlfriend. He followed it up by producing, scripting, and starring in the 2008 comedy
Beer for My Horses, the tale of two small-town sheriffs who set out to avenge a ruthless drug lord. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Country music star Toby Keith writes and stars in this road movie comedy inspired by his chart-topping hit of the same name. Beer for My Horses opens to find small-town deputies and longtime buddies Rack (Keith) and Lonnie (Rodney Carrington) quietly enforcing the law in a small Southern town. Things are relatively quiet in their neck of the woods, so when a violent drug lord (Carlos Sanz) kidnaps Rack's girlfriend (Claire Forlani) in response to seeing his brother (Greg Serano) get arrested, Sheriff Landry (Tom Skerrit) implores them to sit tight and let the professionals handle the case. But Rack and Lonnie aren't about to let Rack's girlfriend suffer any harm at the hands of the notoriously vicious kingpin, and after enlisting the aid of taciturn, bow-and-arrow-toting fellow lawman Skunk Tarver (Ted Nugent), the trio sets out to rescue the girl and ensure that justice is served. The CMT Films production is directed by Michael Salomon (A Glimpse of Hell), with Willie Nelson and Barry Corbin filling out the supporting cast. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

For her first solo mission, novice angel Gloria (Valerie Bertinelli) is assigned to young, self-made billionaire Dennis Loggins (Christopher Daniel Barnes). Though materially successful, Loggins is spiritually bankrupt: his sole mission in life is to exact a terrible revenge against high school bully Ricky (Dylan Bruno) at their 10-year class reunion. Using his considerable influence, Loggins has meticulously arranged to literally destroy Ricky's life in public, thus paying his former tormentor back for humiliating him in front of the entire student body a decade earlier. And how does Loggins' "lost love" Melissa (played by future House costar Jennifer Morrison) figure into this scheme? Appearing as himself, Toby Keith sings "My List". ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In 1996, the Beach Boys took a new approach to their music with the album Stars and Stripes, in which the great harmony group (with founder Brian Wilson once again in the lineup) went to Nashville to re-record some of their best-known songs with some of the biggest names in country music, including Willie Nelson, Rodney Crowell, Tammy Wynette, Lorrie Morgan, and Ricky Van Shelton. Nashville Sounds: The Making of Stars and Stripes takes a look at the studio sessions for this historic album, and also offers footage of the Beach Boys performing with several of their new Nashville friends in concert. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
