The time-honored "Cinderella" legend is once more updated in the Argentine romantic comedy Su Primer Baile (Her First Ball). Maria Duval stars as an orphaned 18-year-old who is brought into the mansion of wealthy Ernesto Vilches. Duval has been coached to claim that she is Vilches' granddaughter as part of a shakedown scheme. But our heroine is too honest and virtuous to sustain the lie, and she resolves to confess all to the old man. She changes her mind when she realizes that she truly loves Vilches, and would sooner die than break his heart. As luck would have it, it is the con artists who are left out in the cold when it turns out that Duval is genuinely Vilches' granddaughter after all! Some American critics opined that Su Primer Baile was heavily influenced by the popular Deanna Durbin vehicles then emanating from Hollywood. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Hollywood director John Reinhardt spent most of the 1940s megging films in South America, specifically Argentina. In Reinhardt's Una Novia en Apuros (A Bride In Trouble), newlywed Alicia Barrie receives a mysterious message on her wedding night. Her new husband suspects that the missive has been sent by one of Barrie's former boyfriends and goes on a rampage. So violent is hubby's temper that our heroine is virtually forced into the arms of handsome Estaban Serrador, who turns out to be the right man for her after all. Some scattered laughs are provided by Pedro Quadracci as a sardonic seen-it-all chauffeur. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Argentine director Carlos Schlieper's first feature-length effort was the offbeat romantic comedy Si Yo Fuera Rice (If I Were Rich). In love with a sneak thief, heroine Amanda Ledesma becomes his willing accomplice. To evade the authorities, Ledesma hides out at a posh mountain resort, posing as a fashion model. Thanks to a series of plot complications that make more sense on screen than in print, a clothing-store sales manager (Severo Fernandez) is forced to pretend to be Ledesma's husband. Love blooms, but it looks for a while like there's an unhappy ending in store when our heroine's criminal boyfriend makes a surprise reappearance. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

La Hora de las Sorpresas (Surprise Hour) was inspired by the popular Argentine radio "amateur-hour" series of the same name. The fragmentary plot concerns the efforts of a young heiress (Rosita Moreno) to win a guest spot on the radio program, and thereby win a bet with her fiancé. Unable to impress the producers when she shows up in all her expensive finery, our heroine auditions a second time, wearing ragged clothing and adopting an assumed name. She further pretends to be the daughter of an ailing vaudeville star, claiming that the money she'll receive from her radio appearance will go towards putting her "daddy" back on his feet. Just before her broadcast debut, the girl is exposed as a fraud -- thereby permitting a steady stream of local variety acts to go on in her place. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
