Fowler wins the case against beautiful District Attorney Natalie Tate (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer), Fowler's former girlfriend, but now he needs to find out who is trying to set him up and for what reason; he hopes he can get some help from his uncle, Clifford Fowler (Jason Robards), a political kingmaker of the old school who knows all the family's secrets. The serialized story structure and barbed social commentary from comic book creator and co-writer Frank Miller earned critical respect in this satirical science fiction sequel directed by Irvin Kershner. Peter Weller returns as RoboCop, a futuristic cyborg fashioned from cutting-edge technology and the biological remains of slain Detroit police officer, Alex Murphy. Still patrolling the city streets, RoboCop is scheduled by his creator, Omni Consumer Products, to be replaced by a new "superior" model, RoboCop 2, that according to designer Juliette Faxx (Belinda Bauer), will contain the human remains not of a cop but a criminal. In the meantime, an instantly addictive drug called Nuke is sweeping through Detroit thanks to a kingpin named Cain (Tom Noonan). Taking Cain to task, RoboCop is captured and dismantled. When he's put back together, the cyborg is reprogrammed with a series of socially conscious commands (in a sly mocking of the then relatively new concept of "political correctness") that render him impotent as a law enforcer. Taking charge by rewiring himself with an electrical overload, RoboCop arrests Cain, who is injured in the process. Faxx secretly takes Cain's brain and inserts it into RoboCop 2, turning the robot immediately into a law-breaking murder machine and leading to a violent showdown between two generations of robotic crime-fighters. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

The fact that Livin' the Blues has next to no budget does not diminish its excellence in the least. This story of modern ghetto life features newcomers Galyn Gorg and Michael Kerr in leading roles. Both are young, both are angry, and both feel trapped by their environment. All that keeps Gorg and Kerr going from day to day is their shared affection for blues music. Unfortunately, this heartfelt human drama has been withdrawn from active circulation; you may, however, be able to find a stray copy or two in big-city "specialty" stores. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Beautiful young women, all living together in one apartment in various states of undress: Yes, we're in Aaron Spelling country again. Made for TV, Nightingales is set in Los Angeles, and centers upon the lives and loves of eight toothsome student nurses. Just to prove that this isn't real life, each nurse has a "past" straight out of the paperback romances (one young lady is the target of a syndicate hit man!) Professional nursing associations had a field day chipping away at the inaccuracies inherent in Nightingales, but the ratings were such that this pilot film graduated into a series in January of 1989. Sensing that few of the eight leading ladies had star potential (with the possible exception of Kristy Swanson), the series added as "cast insurance" Suzanne Pleshette as the director of student nursing, and Barry Newman as the hospital chief of staff. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Remember all those 1940s collegiate musicals, where the finale came down to "Swing vs. the Classics"? Replace "Swing" with "Modern Jazz and Rock", and you've got Body Beat. A tradition-bound ballet academy is invaded by a bunch of free-form dancers. Rather than form a united front against these interlopers, the teachers begin taking sides! Outside of this little twist, nothing much new here. Originally titled Dance Academy, this Italian/American film features Julie Newmar in an extended cameo appearance. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Mike Jittlov, a master of special effects who's strutted his stuff in several short films, is both the director and star of The Wizard of Speed and Time. Jittlov plays himself, an eager-beaver director who offers a reel of special effects to a TV producer. The director makes a huge bet to the producer that he, Jittlov, can expand his reel into a fantastic feature film. Unfortunately, he's out of money, so Jittlov is obliged, Rocky style, to employ friends and family for his epic. In the picture-within-a-picture, Jittlov plays a second role, as the Wizard of Speed and Time (from the movie of the same name). The producer sends out some hired goons to prevent Jittlov from finishing his job, but our hero--both of him--emerges triumphant. Adding to the Pirandellian quality of The Wizard of Speed and Time is the fact that the avaricious fictional producer is played by the film's real producer, Richard Kaye. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
