March of the Penguins producers National Geographic Films team with An Inconvenient Truth producers Paramount Vantage to take viewers on an epic journey into the arctic wilderness in a documentary that explores what happens when the beautiful frozen world occupied by two majestic creatures gradually begins to melt away. Seela is a mother walrus thriving in the chilly waters of the Great North, and Nanu is a polar bear with curved claws that make it easy to maintain her footing on ice. As director Sarah Robertson follows these two remarkable creatures from birth through adolescence, maturity, and, ultimately, parenthood, viewers will bear witness to the cycle of life as it unfolds in a vast frozen landscape that could pose problems for all of humankind if it continues to thaw at the current rate. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Kevin Bacon narrates this documentary (produced by the National Geographic Society) which examines the elemental power of earthquakes, tornadoes, and volcanoes. Combining striking archive footage with computer-created reenactments and interviews explaining just what causes these natural forces to lose control, the film's sequence on volcanoes is centered on the massive Soufriere Hills eruption of 1995, while an tremor in Izmit, Turkey, which cost the lives of 17,000 sets the stage for a segment on earthquakes, and Dr. Joshua Wurman leads a group of "storm chasers" as the filmmakers investigate tornadoes. Forces of Nature was shot and initially exhibited in the high-definition IMAX film format. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Add Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure to Queue Add Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure to top of Queue
In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 men set sail aboard Shackleton's ship the Endurance to Antarctica, with the goal of becoming the first men to cross the South Pole on foot. Unstable weather conditions and a series of unavoidable accidents destroyed the ship and left Shackleton and his men stranded in the icy wastes near the bottom of the world. Shackleton pledged to his men that they would survive the disaster, and remarkably he proved good to his word, with the men of the Endurance returned to safety after a grueling two years in one of the most punishing environments on Earth. Shacketon's Antarctic Adventure combines film shot by Frank Hurley during Shackleton's ill-fated expedition with new footage lensed in the high-definition IMAX format of modern-day adventurers retracing Shackleton's route to document the obstacles presented to the men of the Endurance and how they overcame them. Shacketon's Antarctic Adventure was the second documentary directed by George Butler on Shackleton's fateful voyage to the South Pole, following 2000's The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Add Search for the Great Sharks to Queue Add Search for the Great Sharks to top of Queue
Steven Spielberg captured our imaginations and awoke in us a primal fear of the deep ocean when he made Jaws. Since then we have been relentless in our pursuit to understand the terror of the deep -- sharks. Search for the Great Sharks plays on this fascination and fear by scouring the oceans for the worlds largest sharks. Director al Wolfe has compiled 51 minutes of some of the most intense footage of sharks every filmed. Originally an IMAX feature, Search for the Greatest Sharks is filmed with the intent to make the viewer feel as if they were the diver pursuing the blue whale and great white sharks that are encountered. With detailed narration by Joseph Campanella, this film is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat as the giant teeth of these testy predators chomp down on their prey. The DVD version of this Slingshot Entertainment release is equipped with Internet links and many other menu options that will enhance the experience. ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi

Add Alaska: Spirit of the Wild to Queue Add Alaska: Spirit of the Wild to top of Queue
Before Slingshot Entertainment converted this film to DVD and VHS video, the only place you could see this Academy Award nominated documentary was on an IMAX screen. Though IMAX features are filmed with the intent of being shown on a specially designed screen that gives the viewer the feeling of being in the middle of the action, little has been lost in the conversion of this film. Considering the exceptional clarity of the DVD picture, if one were to have a large screen television and surround sound capability, you would still feel like you were in the middle of Alaska, frolicking with the polar bears. Alaska: Spirit of the Wild is a full immersion experience. The cameras close in on a pack of wolves as they hunt, a herd of caribou as they graze, and thunder through the tundra giving the viewer a never before seen perspective of one of the earth's most fascinating places. With narration by Charlton Heston it is no wonder this film was nominated for Best Documentary in 1998, but the real reason may be director George Casey's dazzling capture of the aurora borealis. The DVD version of this film is Internet ready for further exploration and also equipped with a menu setting that allows the viewer to skip to his/her favorite chapter (which includes the natural history of the Alaskan landscape). ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi

Add Africa: The Serengeti to Queue Add Africa: The Serengeti to top of Queue
Often described as the Dark Continent, Africa has held our imaginations far longer than the racecar or the airplane. There is an abundance of wildlife on the African continent, but no place is more wild or diverse than the Serengeti. With the potential to, at any given moment, capture a lioness tending to her cubs, a cheetah chasing after dinner, and a gazelle gracefully leaping from the water as it escapes the jaws of a crocodile, it is no wonder producers have continued to send crews to this great plane. This particular film takes things a step further. Originally formatted for IMAX theatres, this film was shot to make the viewer feel as if he/she were in the middle of the action. Little of the huge and overpowering scenes have been lost in the conversion (the IMAX screen is typically three to five stories tall and at least 30 yards wide) to the DVD or VHS format. The booming voice of James Earl Jones gives a subtle lyrical twist to the spectacular score of Hans Zimmer and George Cadebe, which only adds to the mystical illusion of being present on the Serengeti. You are sure to feel the heat as you sit through 40 minutes of cheetah chases, crocodile bites, and the grand aerial vistas director Gearge Casey has put together. Kids of all ages who are fascinated by the wild happenings of the African plane will definitely be glad Slingshot Entertainment formatted this film to fit the television and computer monitor. The DVD format is also Internet compatible and has several menu options that allow for full family fun. ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi

Jacques Cousteau (1910-1997) spent much of his lifetime devoted to the water--first as a French naval officer in World War II, then as a marine explorer, oceanographic museum director, and founder of the Underseas Research Group. After winning two Academy Awards for his documentary films on ocean life, Cousteau introduced TV audiences to the fascinating underwater world of sharks, whales and dolphins as well as sunken treasure and coral reefs in the series "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau." In his 1991 documentary "Journey to a Thousand Rivers," Cousteau introduces us to life on the Amazon River--both above and below the surface. ~ Kathryn Tamms, Rovi
