New York art dealer Arne Glimcher took his first crack at film directing with this florid, high-energy romance about two brothers who flee Cuba in the early 1950s to make it as musicians in the United States. Cynthia Cidre wrote the literate screenplay adapted from Oscar Hijuelos's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love. Cesar (Armand Assante) and Nestor Castillo (Antonio Banderas) are popular musicians on Havana's club circuit, but when they make enemies of the wrong people, they are forced to leave for New York City, the moody Nestor leaving behind his true love. In New York, the brothers work as meat-cutters during the day as Cesar tries to organize a band and make inroads into the lively New York music scene. Soon, as The Mambo Kings, they get club bookings and Cesar falls in love with a sharp-tongued cigarette girl, Lanna Lake (Cathy Moriarty), and Nestor with the beautiful Delores Fuentes (Maruschka Detmers), who wants to be a teacher. Cesar concentrates on singing and managing the band, while Nestor plays the trumpet and writes emotional songs of love. All seems to be going well until Cesar antagonizes the moneymen on the Latin nightclub circuit and they finds themselves playing bar mitzvahs. But after they're discovered by Desi Arnaz (Desi Arnaz Jr.), the group is prominently featured on I Love Lucy. Their popularity soars and they cut a successful album called "Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love." This docudrama is designed to inform members of the Comisión Para los Asuntos de la Mujer about the history and goals of this Puerto Rican women's commission. In the story, Cecilia Balseiro (Cordelia González) is a public relations specialist who has been hired to produce the documentary. When she is not attending meetings with commission members in which they discuss possible directions for the project, she is dealing with her private and romantic life, including a relationship with Alfredo (Pablo Alarcon). In one particularly dramatic episode, she comes to the commission to deal with the battering of a female neighbor. When they discover that another neighbor has videotaped everything, they are all relieved at having incontrovertible evidence of the crimes but appalled that the neighbor has been such a peeping tom. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The second of three films by co-writer/director Oliver Stone to explore the effects of the Vietnam War (Platoon and Heaven and Earth are the others), Born On The Fourth Of July tells the true story of Ron Kovic (Tom Cruise), a patriotic, All-American small town athlete who shocks his family by enlisting with the Marines to fight in the Vietnam War. Once he is overseas, however, Kovic's gung-ho enthusiasm turns to horror and confusion when he accidentally kills one of his own men in a firefight. His downfall is furthered by a bullet wound that leaves him paralyzed from the chest down. He returns home, spends an appalling, nightmarish stint in a veterans' hospital, and follows an increasingly disillusioned and fragmented path that ultimately leaves him drunk and dissolute in Mexico. However, Kovic somehow turns himself around and pulls his life together, becoming an outspoken anti-war activist in the process. The film is long but emotionally powerful; many consider it Stone's best work and Cruise's best performance. Both were nominated for Oscars, as was the film itself, but only Stone, who co-wrote the film with Kovic from the latter's book, won for Best Director. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

Johnny Walker (Mickey Rourke) is a punch-drunk and alcoholic cowboy pugilist who gives boxing one last shot in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He meets Wesley Pendergrass (Christopher Walken), the smooth-talking hood who tries to talk Johnny into helping in the heist of a jewelry store. Johnny considers the offer but elects to enter the ring to help Ruby (Debra Feuer) and her financially troubled arcade with the prize money. La Gran Fiesta is set in 1942, when relations between the Continental United States and Puerto Rico were delicate at best. Casino de Puerto Rico, a lavish San Juan nightspot, is about to be turned over to a recreational center for US troops. To celebrate their last night as a "civilian" nighterie, the staff members of the Casino stage one final all-stops-out Grand Ball. Everyone is invited, even those "undesirables" who would normally be shut out of the black-tie establishment. The names of the film's stars will probably be unfamiliar to a non-Latino audience; most filmgoers, however, will quickly recognize Raul Julia and E.G. Marshall in their brief guest appearances. Though many American films and TV programs had previously been lensed in Puerto Rico, La Gran Fiesta was the first feature-length film to be produced by the Puerto Rican film industry itself. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
