Straight-laced Henry Winkler takes a night-shift job as a morgue attendant. Winkler falls under the spell of wheeler-dealer coworker Michael Keaton, whose catchphrase "Is this a great country or what?" is the clarion call for his many get-rich-quick schemes. His latest plan is to turn the morgue into a nocturnal brothel, for the benefit of anything-goes hooker Shelley Long-and incidentally, to line their own pockets. Director Ron Howard and his frequent scripters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel turn the potentially lurid story material of Night Shift into an endearing comedy, with winning performances from its three often miscast stars. Keep an eye out during one of the party sequences for Kevin Costner as a carousing college boy. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In flashback, we are treated to glimpses of the Milwaukee-to-California trip taken by Laverne (Penny Marshall), Shirley (Cindy Williams), Lenny (Michael McKean) and Squiggy (David L. Lander) at the outset of Season Six. Actually, we set several different flashbacks telling highly different stories, endeavoring to establish who was to blame for trashing a hotel room occupied en route by the four merry wanderers. It is up to Carmine (Eddie Mekka)--who was still in Milwaukee when the "trashing" occurred--to determine who is telling the truth, and who isn't. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Frank (Phil Foster) and Edna (Betty Garrett) gear up for the grand opening of their new Hollywood restaurant, Cowboy Bill's. At the same time, jobless Laverne (Penny Marshall) endeavors to pay off her debts to Shirley (Cindy Williams) by agreeing to play the "target" in Sonny's knifethrowing act, which is planned as the main attraction of the opening ceremonies. Alas, Sonny (Ed Marinaro) is unable to appear, obliging a nervous (and notoriously accident-prone) Shirley to take his place! With this episode, Eddie Mekka rejoins the cast as "Big Ragu" Carmine. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
