Acclaimed film director Sydney Pollack took a five-year break from the realms of fiction to assemble a lovingly crafted tribute to longtime friend and acclaimed architect Frank Gehry in this documentary born from the sketches of its talented subject. A notoriously shy craftsman whose impressive body of work includes the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Ghery is shown working in his studio unobstructed as Pollack attempts to capture the very essence of the artist's bold works through use of film and digital video. Driven by an intimate but informal series of discussions between Ghery and Pollack, Sketches of Frank Gehry uses the subject of architecture as a launching point to discuss the creative process, and paints a fascinating portrait of how one humble man was able to create some of the world's most awe-inspiring structures. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Nova Video Library: Battle Alert in the Gulf documents the Navy battle group that supports the aircraft carrier USS Independence as it finishes its final tour. The battle group enforces the "no-fly" zone over Iraq and includes everything from battleships and submarines to fighter jets, radar planes, and helicopters. Viewers see the aircraft in action as they watch for Iraqi planes flying in the no-fly zone. Submarines test the security of the battleships by sneaking up and firing fake torpedoes. Merchant ships are stopped and inspected to see if they are smuggling goods such as oil. The soldiers, both male and female, are shown in action and talking to family on the phone. Many of the high-tech devices are shown in detail, including the nuclear-powered ships and the FA-18 Hornet, which requires only one pilot and is equipped to strike both air and ground targets. ~ Thomas Carpenter, All Movie Guide
Pop Art icon Claes Oldenburg achieved fame in the 1960's for his large scale sculptures of food and other ordinary household items. He went on to continually challenge the public's perception of the boundary between artistic objects and pedestrian ones -- between art and life -- through numerous soft sculptures, ambitious public monuments and performances, and a wealth of fantastically original drawings. This irreverent documentary and retrospective of his work (including collaborations with his wife, Coosje van Bruggen) features an inside look at the artist's studio, the construction of his Giant Houseball in Petaluma, California, and interviews with leading dealers, critics, and artists such as Jim Dine and Roy Lichtenstein. ~ Sarah Welsh, All Movie Guide
