The first new entry in the G.I. Joe franchise for the 21st century--a franchise that stretched back to Hasbro Toys' introduction of the "G.I. Joe" action figure back in 1964, and included three previous cartoon programs--the animated G.I. Joe Sigma 6 was a coproduction of Hasbro and Japan's Gonzo Studios. The "team" concept was carried over from the earlier cartoon versions, as a group of six multiethnic "Joes" (men and women), each endowed with incredible strength and resilience and boasting the latest in secret-agent technology, did weekly battle against their traditional enemies, the minions of the evil organization COBRA. Motivating many of the plotlines was the race between Sigma Six and Cobra to locate the mysterious Power Stones, which yielded unbelievable technological powers. The character lineup on this occasion (eminently adaptable to Hasbro playthings) included, of course, the six main Joes: Duke, Snake Eyes, Tunnel Rat, Long Haul, Heavy Duty and Scarlet. Also on hand were Commander Cobra, Overlord Vector, General Hawk, Kamukara, Hi-Tech, Machete, Destro, Zaratan, Storm Shadow, Torch and Jinx the Ninji, Spirit the Indian, The Baroness, Tomax, Flint, Overkill, Scott, and Spud the Robo Dog. Introduced with a 5-part pilot episode, G.I. Joe Sigma 6 was added to the Fox Network's Saturday-morning "4Kids" cartoon lineup on August 27, 2005. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

One of several Japanese animé series seen on the Fox Network's "Fox Box" Saturday a.m. lineup during the 2002-2003 season, Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy was a spinoff of the Kinnikuman cartoon weekly that had been running in Japan since 1983. The heroes of the piece were the good-guy members of the Muscle League Champions, an aggregation of wrestlers. Having just met defeat at the hands of their perennial enemies, the dMp, the Champions recruited an alien wrestler named Kid Muscle, the son of a legendary grappler. Not wishing to have the playing field leveled, the dMp dispatched the villainous Addversarious to eliminate Kid Muscle, the better to wipe out the rest of the heroes and take over the Earth. Coming to the rescue was Meat, the trainer of Kid Muscle's father, who endeavored to teach the boy his dad's celebrated "secret moves." First broadcast in Japan in 2001, Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy made its American TV debut on September 14, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A handful of strange creatures prove just how dangerous the imagination can be in the third American feature adapted from the popular Pokemon animated series. Prof. Spencer Hale is an archeologist studying ancient Pokemon when he uncovers a strange breed of "pocket monsters" called "Unown," whose bodies form runic symbols that resemble the letters of the alphabet. The Unown can read people's minds and transform their fantasies into reality, and when the professor mysteriously disappears, his young daughter Molly is given the materials (and the Pokemon) her father collected. As Molly plays with the Unown, her home is mysteriously transformed into a crystal fortress that expands to envelop the entire community of Greenfield, and a number of dangerous monsters are released from Molly's daydreams -- one of whom captures her mother and spirits her away. Realizing the crisis is the work of the Unown, legendary Pokemon-trainer Ash leaps into action to capture the creatures and teach Molly about the dangers of the Unown. Pokemon the Movie 3: Spell of the Unown was distributed with an accompanying short subject, Pikachu and Pichu, which finds the most popular Pokemon visiting the city with his new friend. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Originating as a Japanese manga by Eiichiro Oda in 1999, the half-hour anime series One Piece was a rousing swashbuckler revolving around the exploits of youthful seafarer Monkey D. Luffy. Inspired by his childhood idol "Red-Haired" Shanks, Luffy aspired to become King of the Pirates (nice pirates, of course). After accidentally digesting the demonic Gum Gum Fruit, Luffy was endowed with the power to stretch his arms, legs and neck in the fantastic tradition of the American comic-book protagonist Plastic Man. Utilizing this unique talent, Luffy set sail with a fearless male-and-female pirate band, on a quest for the fabulous fortune of the late pirate king Gold Roger, not mention the elusive and priceless artifact (or is it a location?) known only One Piece. Meanwhile, various scurvy knaves endeavored to track down Luffy, hoping to collect the "100 Million Berries" bounty on his head. Calling themselves the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy's crew included wily female thief Nami (who only stole from other pirates), musical swordsman Roronoa Zolo, ace sharpshooter Usopp, resourceful cook Sanji, and Tony-Tony Chopper, the latter the "cute and fuzzy" animal mascot so common to Anime. Foremost of the villains were Captain "Axe-Hand" Morgan (and yes, he had an axe for a hand), Morgan's pantywaist son Hellmeppo, the malevolent Buggy the Clown, the duplicitous Don Kreig (he'd even kill his own crew to get ahead), and the huge, witchlike Alvida In the United States, One Piece debuted as part of the Fox network's Saturday-moring "4Kids" manifest on September 18, 2004. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In a fantastic alternate universe, there are 151 different varieties of the creatures called Pokemon, each with its own unique talents. Many humans attempt to capture the Pokemon and train them; the top trainers can teach the critters how to capture and train other Pokemon, making them Pokemon Masters. Mewtwo has powers of which a mere Pokemon can only dream, and when he uses his skills to create even more super-Pokemon, Ash and his Pokemon friends must join forces to battle for survival.
