Following up on her Camera d'Or-winning feature-film debut Suzaku and her understated documentary Somaudo Monogatari, Naomi Kawase spins this lyrical work about two troubled souls plagued by demons of their past. The film opens with Ayako (Yuko Nakamura) storming out of her tumble-down house after a loud row with her boyfriend -- only to walk into the pathway of an oncoming car. One of the first people to come to her aid is a moody potter named Daiji (Toshiya Nagasawa), who thinks that she intended to commit suicide. Though not the case, Ayako -- who works as a stripper -- is depressed and emotionally scarred following the suicide of her mother as a child. Daiji, who has a few issues of his own, invites her to a mountain festival for which he fashioned hundreds of ceramic containers for an outdoor votive candle display. Unfortunately, Ayako's club is raided and she is forced to spend the day in jail. Thinking that she killed herself, Daiji searches desperately for her. Later, love tentatively blooms. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

In his third film, Mitsuo Yanagimachi takes a harsh view of Japan's technological modernism and its effects on the quality of life. The film opens with the drowning deaths of farmer Yukio's two sons. Their deaths send him on a course of self-destruction. Blaming himself, he breaks with his family and wife, becomes a truck driver, and takes a mistress. Popping pills to stay alert at his job, Yukio's perception of reality begins to falter, and, as his psychosis flowers, he initiates conflicts with everyone in his life. Eventually, Yukio's anger with himself and the world drives him to violence and the film ends on a brutal, sour note. True to his previous style, Yanagimachi offers no explanation for the film's hostile conclusion, leaving the movie open to a number of interpretations. Rather than isolating a single cause for Yukio's breakdown, the film delimits a constellation of factors -- all of which are rooted in the conflict between the traditional lifestyle of rural Japan and its incipient modernization. ~ Brian Whitener, Rovi

This feature is the directorial debut for film critic and writer Masato Harada. Dan-san (Takuzo Kawatani), a young man who is obsessed with movies and women, offers a hilarious impression of Marlon Brando and makes friends with movie maven Shuma (Naohiko Shigeta). Shuma becomes infuriated when Dan-san attempts to interfere with his romance with the low-life gutter girl Minami (Atsuko Asano). The director shows his obvious affection for the styles of gangster films, tawdry saloons, and pop music, with more than a passing nod to Martin Scorsese. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Male bonding and romantic love are the two major elements in this first-time drama from movie critic Harada Masato. Shuma (Naohiko Shigeta) is whiling away time, waiting to hear about his acceptance into the university. A favorite way of passing time is to go to the movies and on one of these excursions he makes friends with Dan (Takuzo Kawatani), an obsessive movie buff. As their friendship grows, Minami (Atsuko Asano) enters the picture. Shuma carries a big torch for her until he finds out that she is no more than a "gun moll." Shuma's anger at Minami's gangster connections makes him say a few things to Dan that are ill-advised. Shuma forgets about it soon afterwards, but unfortunately, Dan does not. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Though this film is unlikely to find a wide audience in America, Akai Kami No Onna was ranked fourth in prestigious film journal Kinema Jumpo's annual ten best list in 1979, and Junko Miyashita, an icon of Japan's popular softcore films, garnered a best actress award. Director Tatsumi Kumashiro gives us an intimate portrait of the film's central character set against a working-class background. Miyashita plays a hitchhiker picked up by a truck driver (Renji Ishibashi) who takes her back to his rundown hovel. Claiming that she is running away from her husband, she moves in with the trucker and proceeds to engage in a grueling routine of non-stop sex -- until her violent ex-boyfriend pays an unexpected visit. This film is considered one of the finest movies in the Nikku Roman Porno genre. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
