Boy Gobert Movies

Born to an aristocratic, prominent family, Boy Gobert started as a Shakespearean and dramatic actor on the German stage. He later switched to film, and since 1957 he has appeared in over 50 films, including Die Fledermaus(1964) and Kamikaze '89 (1983). ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This film is a superficial extravaganza on the "roaring 1950s" in West Germany and West Berlin, when the rich, according to director Peter Zadek, were partying through the decade with little else on their minds than hedonistic pleasures, and the poor were struggling to become richer. Documentary clips bring in the realities of the Berlin Wall and the Cold War, and their honesty stands in sharp contrast to the exaggerated lifestyles that permeate the screen. The story focuses on the super-rich Jakob Formann (Juraj Kurkura) and his exploits and friends in high and low places. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A musical work by Johann Strauss first performed in 1874 provides the basis for this musical comedy set in Vienna during the late 19th-century. It tells the story of a prince who plans an enormous costume ball with Phillip, his good friend. They are holding the ball to get revenge on Alexander, another friend. As the lavish dance begins, comic mayhem ensues. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Die Ideal Frau is a very slight, German romantic comedy that features one of the nation's more popular actresses, Ruth Leuwerik as the mayor of a small town at odds with her husband. The catch is that she is secretly married and to make matters worse, her husband (Martin Benrath) leads the opposition party on the town council. Rather than highlight serious political differences set against a romantic pairing, the scripters and director Josef von Baky have decided to keep the couple's disagreements down to a safe level -- they argue over whether or not a music festival should be held in the town. Perhaps a more burning issue would have added some punch to the comedy. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The Rest Is Silence, a German-made attempt to update Shakespeare, is one of the best and least self-conscious of this minor genre. As indicated by the title, the film's script is a "mufti" version of Hamlet, with young Hardy Kruger trying to prove that his uncle (Peter van Eyck) has killed his father. Direct references to the Shakespeare original abound, right down to the re-enactment of the crime for the benefit of the Uncle and the periodic appearances of the ghost of the hero's father. Interestingly, this 1960 film was released at the same time as a "straight" German version of Hamlet, made for television and starring Maximillian Schell. The original title of Rest Is Silence was Der Rest Ist Schweigen. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Monpti is better known by its English-language title Love From Paris. Romy Schneider stars as Anne Claire, a seamstress who pretends to be wealthy in order to crash society. In this guise, she meets and falls in love with starving artist Monpti (Horst Buchholz), who has no time for women of wealth. Sensing a challenge, Anne pursues Monpti, keeping her true identity a secret. What starts as a light-hearted romp unexpectedly deepens into tragedy. The film is narrated by a wry, all-knowing Parisian who, at closer inspection, turns out to be director Helmut Kautner. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
