For his feature debut, writer/director Christopher Herrmann chose a subject near and dear to his heart. Herrmann had been the biographer and a close friend of renowned choreographer Martha Graham before the dance legend passed away in 1991 at the age of 96. With Ghostlight, Herrmann pays tribute to Graham by recreating the events that preceded Phaedra. Graham is portrayed by drag queen Richard Move (who also co-wrote the script), and Ann Magnuson plays Barbara Rosen, a filmmaker who is permitted to document the process of bringing Phaedra to the stage. Deborah Harry and Mark Morris appear as themselves in cameo roles. Ghostlight screened at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

The American Ballet Theatre is one of the most prestigious dance companies in the world, and meeting the high standards required to join the troupe is no small accomplishment. Born to Be Wild: Leading Men of the American Ballet Theatre is a documentary which looks at four of the ABT's principle male dancers -- Jose Manuel Carreno, Angel Corella, Vladimir Malakov, and Ethan Steifel -- and explores the different paths which brought them to the summit of American classical dance. The film also includes extensive footage of the dancers in performance. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This performance by the Mark Morris Dance Group provides the viewer with a fresh look at Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Part of the Great Performances series from PBS, this innovative, iconoclastic adaptation of the Christmas favorite features dancers in nontraditional costumes. Flapper dresses, go-go boots, leather, and hip huggers are some of the styles worn by the performers on the minimalist set. Gone are the toy soldiers, and in their place are Barbie dolls and G.I. Joe lookalikes. The production takes its inspiration from the source book by E.T.A. Hoffman, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The beloved music of Tchaikovsky remains the constant in this otherwise distinctively contemporary take on a Christmas classic. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide
