The ad copy for this ABC TV movie (part of the network's "Crimes of Passion" series) pretty much says it all: "Lying. Manipulation. Murder. The Things We Do For Love." Police detective Rick Barrish (Greg Evigan) is enmeshed in a sordid love triangle with his female partner Dusty (Alexandra Powers) and his mysterious new fiancée Laura Trevelyn (Brenda Bakke). At the same time, Barrish is piecing together the distrurbing clues--and following the trail of corpses--involved in a major heroin case. The two separate plot strands are inextricably intertwined as the story races to a truly unexpected climax. Based on a novel by a former Miami crime reporter, Edna Buchanan's Nobody Lives Forever originally aired March 26, 1998. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Dashing into the street to prevent her daughter from being hit by truck, widow Joanna Burke (Sherilyn Fenn) is herself struck down an rendered unconscious. She awakens to find herself in a parallel world, where she has no daughter, someone else is living in her house, and there is no "Joanna Burke." Instead, everyone refers to Joanna as Sarah Randolph -- the same Sarah Randolph who has been accused of murdering her own son. Not surprisingly, no one believes Joanna/Sarah when she protests her innocence, except for Dr. Matt Westbrook (Thomas Gibson)...who may himself be trapped in a world he never made. Adapted from the paranormal novel by Margaret Tabor, the made-for-TV Nightmare Street was first telecast by ABC on January 18, 1998. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This lesbian drama is patterned after the romantic melodramas of the 1940s. It is set in Vancouver, BC and centers on rising stand-up comic Sheila Caston, and her lover, Julie, who owns an art gallery. The two have been living together in Sheila's home for five years. The trouble begins when Sheila learns that television producers are thinking about creating a TV sitcom around her comedy. But Sheila's elation is short-lived when she sees that the producer's wife and business partner is her former friend Lynn. When Sheila and Lynn were girls they had been very close until Sheila made a sexual move on Lynn who flipped out and rejected her. Sheila could not cope with it and ended up staying in a mental health facility. Now Lynn is here and she wants to talk. The electricity between the two is palpable, but neither of their lovers are aware of the history Lynn and Sheila share. Emotional turmoil ensues culminating in a happy ending. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Michael A. Gilbert's Office Party was the basis for the Canadian thriller Hostile Takeover (it also bears traces of "Wall to Wall War", an episode of the 1963 TV anthology The Richard Boone Show). David Warner plays a mild-mannered office worker who one morning kicks over protocol and pulls a gun, taking his co-workers hostage. It isn't that Warner is rebelling against a society that has kicked him around all his life, nor has he any beef against the company. It's just that he wants to be totally in control of a situation, a thrill he has never previously experienced. More than likely, the hostage situation could be resolved peaceably, but gonzo mayor John Vernon, jockeying for votes, insists that Warner be neutralized by a SWAT team. As these plans are formulated on the outside, Warner becomes obsessed with his new power, forcing his captives to humiliate themselves in various ways. This, in turns, leads to a breakdown in inhibitions amongst the workers--and an impromptu "group therapy" session! From this point on, dear reader, you're on your own: nothing that follows in Hostile Takeover is what one expects to happen, so henceforth we'll keep mum. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The "Moonie" cult of the 1970s and '80s has been cited as the principal inspiration for the 1981 Canadian production Ticket to Heaven. Nick Mancuso plays impressionable youth David Kappel, who, after breaking up with his girlfriend, tries to find an emotional balm by joining a religious sect. The first portion of the film details David's indoctrination into the group. The remaining portion concerns the efforts made by his parents to locate their thoroughly brainwashed son. R.H. Thomson dominates the final scenes as a "deprogrammer" hired to shake David out of his religious euphoria. Ticket to Heaven was based on Moonwebs, a novel by Josh Freed. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
