Described by its producers as "the first silent film of the third millennium," this offbeat comic fantasy concerns Alladin (Gael Bordier), the hero of a silent film from the 1920s who through some strange circumstance finds himself transported into the real world, circa 2000. Unable to hear or speak (after all, there's no sound where he comes from), Alladin has his troubles adjusting to life in 21st century Paris, and as he tries to make sense of the world around him, he falls madly in love with a painting of a sexy female robot on the backboard of a pinball machine. It takes a five-franc coin to play the machine, and Alladin sets out on an obsessive pursuit of the coins, convinced they contain magical properties that will allow him to bring the woman of his dreams onto the same plane as himself. Shot in both color and black-and-white, Le Royaume Des Rapiats, appropriately enough, features no dialogue, with title cards taking the place of speech, though it does include a musical score by Francois Staal. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
