This strange crime-cum-romance story starts out with the ordinary work-a-day life of Mangin, an apparently straight-and-narrow cop (Gerard Depardieu), and then segues into a love story after he meets Noria, a beautiful Arab woman (Sophie Marceau) who has just been arrested during a drug raid. Mangin grills her, but his buddy, a lawyer of dubious ethics named Lambert (Richard Anconina), gets the woman released. Enamored almost from the beginning, Mangin begins to pursue Noria and soon finds himself faced with making the ethical decision to arrest her -- or not. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this irreverent comedy, four guys from a Paris housing project fabricate a documentary about drug dealers working in the City of Lights. When a television network falls hook, line, and sinker for the prank video, the foursome are given a free three-week vacation in the upscale resort community of Biarritz. As they interact with both locals and fellow tourists, they learn about love, friendship, racism, and the differences between the rich and the poor. This debut feature from director Djamel Bensalah was expanded to feature length from a short subject (the fake exposé on drug dealing) and became a surprise box-office hit in France. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this offbeat drama laced with comedy, Dr. Philippe Lehman (Philippe Manez) is a psychiatrist with an unusual specialty -- he treats people who struggle with tics, and uses a unique mixture of physical and psychological techniques to help his patients overcome their problems. Lehman works with a group of eight patients who suffer from a variety of physical and verbal tics, ranging from a man who constantly stretches his neck (and believes he can communicate with animals) to a school teacher who believes her mild condition is holding her back professionally. When Lehman is accused of malpractice, he is forced to go before a medical council and explain his theories, his patients, and how he tries to put his ideas into practice. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

French writer/director Bernard Rapp (Une Affaire de Goût) creates a neo-fable, of sorts, with his 2003 film, Pas Si Grave (No Big Deal). About a quarter of a century ago, Spanish artist Pablo (director Alejandro Jodorowsky) and his musician wife, Pilar (Pascale Roberts), escaped their native country and its civil war for sanctuary in Belgium. Shortly after arriving in their new home, the couple adopted three five-year-old boys from different ethnic backgrounds and raised them to become artists in their own right. Now grown, Charlie (Sami Bouajila), Max (Jean-Michel Portal), and Leo (Romain Duris) are brought together by their father, who has begun to feel his age and now spends a fair amount of time pondering how much longer he has to live. In an attempt to bring his sons closer together, Pablo gives them a mission: travel to Spain and steal a famous and well-guarded bust of the Virgin Mary and return it to Belgium. Immediately complying, the men set about to accomplish their assignment, while managing to truly get to know each other in the process. No Big Deal was a participating film at the 2003 New York Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi
