A former athlete seek a second chance in life through the game he abandoned years ago in this drama from Poland. Jacek (Marcin Dorocinski) used to be a talented soccer player who had earned a position on the national team. But when a serious injury put Jacek's career on hold, his life fell apart; he developed a serious drinking problem, his wife left him, and he was beaten up by toughs. Now homeless, Jacek spends his days panhandling in a rail station in Warsaw, where he becomes friends with a handful of other down-and-outers. One of Jacek's new comrades tells him about the Homeless World Cup, an international football tournament designed to give marginalized citizens a chance to prove their talent through sport. When his friends learn that Jacek was once a rising star on the soccer field, they convince him to coach the local homeless soccer team, and as this handful of alcoholics and addicts begin to respond to Jacek's leadership, he regains the self-respect and sense of purpose he lost when he had to quit the game. Directed by Kasia Adamik, Boisko Bezdomnych (aka The Offsiders) also stars Rafal Fudalej, Marek Kalita and Piotra Jagielski. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Wearing its influence from old-school Hollywood romantic comedies on its sleeve, Polish director Maciej Zak's Rozmowy Noca (Midnight Talks) charts the seriocomic vicissitudes in the relationship between two culinary personnel. Magdalena Rozczka stars as Matylda, an eccentric and hopelessly single baker who spends her days making angels out of salt dough. Feeling an internal sense of deep dissatisfaction, she attempts to fulfill her longings by conceiving a child with the able assistance of a sperm donor (whom she locates via a classified ad in the local paper). In time, Bartek (Marcin Dorocinski) responds - a handsome donor whose occupation as a chef cleanly meshes with that of Matylda. Lo and behold, even though both 'partners' vow to keep the relationship strictly professional, in time romantic feelings begin to blossom and they find themselves hopelessly involved. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Award-winning Polish director Marek Koterski takes an unflinching look at the pathological effects of severe alcoholism on familial relationships in the no-holds-barred drama We're All Christs (Wszyscy jestes'my Chrystusami). The story concerns Adas (played at ages 33 and 55 by Andrzej Chyra, and Marek Kondrat, respectively), a father caught in the web of alcohol addiction passed down from the generations before him. The disease once threatened to destroy his own relationship with his young son. Now, after admitting his own problem and experiencing therapy and rehabilitation, Adas takes the first steps toward a challenging reconnection with his family and attempts to rebuild long-decimated bonds. As a lapsed Roman Catholic, he begins to turn toward the faith that he shunned as a youth, and recognizes the necessity of turning away from the evil, abusive legacy of his father on earth and toward his Heavenly Father as a far-superior alternative. In the end, his Catholicization will partially entail turning to Christ as a role model by assuming responsibility for his own earthly burdens (and thus, taking up his cross). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Polish director Urszula Urbaniak created this gentle character study about two friends living in a lonely train station in Aniolowo. Maria (Karolina Dryzner) has little to do as a train watcher, since few trains venture out to that remote region of the country, that is, until her best friend Krystyna (Ewa Lorska) returns from her wanderings. After an ill-fated double date, the pair's friendship is tested. Torowisko was screened at the 1999 Montreal Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
