A group of intergalactic soldiers fight for their lives on an inhospitable desert planet after their spaceship crashes while transporting an extraterrestrial prisoner. When their captive stages a daring escape, the soldiers receive orders to bring it back alive at all costs. That proves to be a challenge when the creature begins hunting its captors, killing them off one by one as they strain to recapture it without using lethal force. Before long, only one soldier is left standing. He realizes that the longer he refrains from killing the alien the more likely it is he will become its next victim. Donald Faison, Jamie-Lynn DiScala, Joey Fatone, and Whoopi Goldberg star in actor-turned-writer/director Mike Cerrone's identity crisis comedy concerning a young black man raised as an Italian-American. Renato may be black, but don't tell him that. Ever since he was just a young boy Renato was raised by Italian-Americans, and now that he's a grown man he refuses to even consider that he might be anything else. All of that quickly changes, however, when Renato's birth parents show up one day in an attempt to make good on the misdeeds of their past. When Renato realizes that he has been black all along, he rejects his Italian family, breaks-up with his Jewish girlfriend, and makes a concerted effort to connect with his true origins. In this science fiction thriller, child psychiatrist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) has developed a technique that allows her to travel through the minds of her patients. When Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio), a multiple murderer who methodically drowns his victims and performs bizarre rituals with their bodies, falls into a coma, FBI agent Peter Novak (Vince Vaughn) asks Deane to enter the killer's psyche, in the hope of finding a missing girl whom Stargher has kidnapped; if she's not soon found, in all likelihood she'll die in his torture cell. However, once Deane enters the bizarre world of Stargher's mind, she finds getting out to be a very difficult matter. The Cell was the first feature from director Tarsem, who previously made award-winning commercials and music videos, including the video for R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion." Noted hip-hop producer DJ Pooh, who co-wrote the urban comedy Friday, makes his directorial debut with this comedy-drama. A young African-American man is enjoying his freedom after his second stretch in prison. Under the "three strikes and you're out" law, another brush with the police could mean life behind bars, so he's determined to stay out of trouble. Australian director Alan White creates this bleak but gorgeously photographed urban drama about life in Sydney's seedy inner suburbs. Hoping to escape his dad's drunken and abusive behavior, Barky runs away from home to cut cane in the north of the country. Two years later, he returns to his down-and-out hometown to attend the funeral of his father and to make amends with his brother Wace, with whom he had a falling-out. As he meets up with old friends and his ex-girlfriend Lanny, Barky reveals more and more about the enigmatic workings of his mind and the grim circumstances of his upbringing. Shot on a very low budget, the film nonetheless creates a compelling portrait of this gritty, oppressive land. Lest you imagine that the Polish farm family which hid director Debbie Goodstein's Jewish family in their attic during World War Two was motivated by the milk of human kindness, it is well to remember that they took every valuable item the family members possessed as compensation for their troubles. And a newborn baby who could not be safely hidden had to be abandoned on the steps of a nearby church. This documentary recounts this tale as the director revisits this site, so important to her family's history. The film crew was not received in this rural village with open arms. Indeed, anti-Semitic slogans and swastikas were freshly painted on walls in the neighborhood by way of "welcome." The film's recording of present day Polish attitudes underscore the wonder her family survived at all. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
