A man's effort to reunite his family unwittingly uncovers some painful secrets in this drama from Sweden. Magnus (Per Graffman) is a photographer who wants to do something special for his mother Elisabeth (Basia Frydman) in honor of her upcoming seventy-fifth birthday. Magnus thinks it would be good to get the family together for a group portrait, since there aren't any pictures of his parents and siblings all together, and his father is in poor health. But as Magnus tries to reunite his family for a sitting, the sad history of his mother's life is played out for the cameras. As a young woman, Elisabeth (played in her youth by Alexandra Rapaport) was left pregnant by a brief dalliance with her lover, and she was forced to give up the child. Despondent, Elisabeth found comfort when she fell in love with Lars (Mikael Persbrandt), but after they were married, he revealed himself as an alcoholic who didn't much care for children and often lashed out at their son. Elisabeth's depression returned as her relationship with Lars became increasingly distant, and all these years later, Magnus's efforts to bring the family together for a reunion opens more wounds than it heals, especially as he tries to find the daughter his mother gave away before she was married. Inga Tarar (aka No Tears) was the first directorial effort from veteran producer Hakan Bjerking. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Jacob Eklund returns as hard-bitten cop Johan Falk in this sequel to the thriller Noll Tolerans. After causing a commotion with his last assignment, Falk has been given a desk job, which hardly agrees with his personality, and he ends up accepting an offer from an old friend to buy into a private investigation agency. Another friend of Falk's, Sven (Samuel Froler), purchased a business in Estonia, and when local gangsters attempted to pressure him into paying protection money, Sven retained the services of Nikolaus Lehmann (Christoph M. Ohrt), a burly private eye, to throw them off his trail. However, Lehmann does his job all too well, murdering the racketeers, and then threatening Sven and his family. With no where else to turn, Sven asks Falk to help him deal with the crazed Lehmann; Falk agrees, but soon realizes he's dealing with a more dangerous man than he imagined when Lehmann kidnaps Falk's wife Jeanette (Lia Boysen), and then releases her with a time bomb locked around her neck, demanding that Falk hand over ownership of his detective agency to Lehmann. Livvakterna was one of the first films shot using Sony's Cine Alta digital video system, which records images at 25 frames per second in order to conform with the speed of motion picture film in Europe. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A popular television personality learns the hard way that fame has as many drawbacks as advantages in this satiric comedy. Alexander (Johan Rheborg) is the host of a wildly popular Swedish talk show, which has made him famous, wealthy, and very successful with women. But Alexander senses there's something missing in his life, and when he's interviewed by Asa (Alexandra Rapaport), an attractive but no-nonsense journalist, he's immediately smitten. Asa, however, isn't much interested in Alexander, and he soon finds himself in the novel position of pursuing one of the few women he can't seduce on demand. Life becomes all the more complicated for Alexander when he's approached by Ralf (Kristian Luuk), an former schoolmate who has written a book but can't find anyone to publish it. Ralf asks Alexander to put his name on the manuscript so a publisher will pick it up, and Alexander agrees. But Alexander doesn't bother to read the text before the book hits the streets, and he learns too late that the book is a bitter rant against conventional morality that quickly makes him a national pariah. Kristian Luuk, who plays Alexander's old school chum, is himself the host of a successful chat show in Sweden. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Hrafn Gunnlaugsson directs this bleak historical drama about repressed sexuality, Satan, and ghoulish modes of torture. Set during the 17th century, the film opens with a wizened old man stumbling upon the doorstep of a remote Icelandic monastery. The old man, on his death bed, recounts his life story to one of the priests. The action flashes back to 1643, where Jon Magnusson (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason) has just graduated from the seminary and is told that he can take over a small isolated parish if he marries the former vicar's wife Thorkatla (Gudrun Kristin Magnusdottir), who turns out to be 30 years older than him. Though they eventually marry, he refuses to sleep with her, arguing that they must not yield to the pleasures of the flesh. In truth, Jon does not want to succumb to the flesh of a dowdy middle-aged woman, instead he hungers for the pert young body of the comely Thuridur (Sara Gogg Asgeirsdottir). In a desperate attempt to drive away the miasma of frustrated thoughts wracking his brain, he stages a one-man campaign against Satan worshippers. Accusing Thuridur's father (Jon Sigurbjornsson) and brother (Jon Tryggvasson) of witchcraft, he has them sentenced to death. Later, Jon gives Thuridur an offer she cannot refuse -- have sex with him or watch her menfolk go up in flames. Of course, she does refuse. Not long afterward, her relatives are rendered into ash and congealed fat and Thuridur herself is accused of the crime. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
