This sentimental story is taken from the novel by Heinrich Spoerl but strays from the original. Teachers and students are the focus of the plot, with Hans (Walter Giller) in love with Marion (Nadja Tiller). Uschi Glass and Hans Richter also star in this remake of the 1944 classic by Helmut Weiss. Richter plays a teacher in this production after starring as a student in the earlier version. The student-teacher theme seems to be an inexhaustible vehicle for Teutonic filmmakers. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

A female reporter masquerades as a high school student to write a story on the youth of today. The students spend the majority of their time playing practical jokes on their peers and teachers. The reporter falls for Dr. Wagner, the idolized and idealistic educator who is the favorite of the student body and who, out of respect from the students, is usually exempt from their pranks. Other teacher types that nearly every high school student has encountered are accurately portrayed: there's the severe disciplinarian, the narcissist, the reactionary, and the one just hanging on hoping to retire with no further trouble before the pension goes into effect. At one point in the movie, the journalist/student is subjected to a mild spanking at the hands of her peers for a minor infraction, hence the title of this light comedy. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Originally titled Le Soleil des Voyous, Action Man teams two veteran international film stars: France's Jean Gabin and America's Robert Stack. Gabin plays an ex-criminal, now reformed and ensconsed in a respectable executive job. Stack plays an unreconstituted crook who wants to inveigle Gabin into one last caper. The crime goes off like clockwork, but drug dealers who want a piece of the action kidnap Gabin's wife Suzanne Flon and hold her for ransom. Stack ends up sacrificing his own life to save those of Gabin and Flon. Based on a novel by J. M. Flynn Action Man is the sort of bread-and-butter fare that director Jean Delannoy, famed for his earlier spiritual classics La Symphonie Pastorale (1946), Le Jeux Sons Faits (1947) and Diary of a Country Priest (1950), dealt with in his twilight years. In certain gamier markets, Action Man was released as Leather and Nylon. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This three-part Austrian/Czech comedy stretches the boundaries of what is considered to be humorous. Part one finds a silent film actor upset because of a rival actor's attention to the former's wife. When he kills his rival, it is only when he is strapped to the electric chair that he realizes that this is his last live scene. The second episode has the wife of an elderly British nobleman having an affair with the young gamekeeper of their estate. Part three finds a peasant woman taking a lover when her husband goes off to fight the war. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

- Walter Giller, Gitte Haenning, (more)
A trio of crooks just out of prison plan their next scheme to strike it rich in this amusing crime comedy. Their scheme is to ship Volkswagens to the United States, sell them for a profit, and eliminate the nearly 18 months waiting time the car buyers normally had to endure. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

This drama is taken from Thomas Mann's 1903 semi-autobiographical novel. Tonio (Jean Claude Brialy) is an aspiring writer and the son of a rigid aristocratic father and a music-loving mother. Wandering throughout Germany and Italy to "find himself," Tonio frequently remembers his childhood experiences in a series of flashbacks. The highlight of the film is the expert lensing by cinematographer Wolf Wirth. Erika Mann, the daughter of the late poet and author, collaborated with Ennio Flaiano on the screenplay. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Much of this drama parallels the action in the famed medieval morality play Everyman. The movie begins with an industrial magnate's visit to Salzburg. There he sees his friend who will be playing "Death" in the city's yearly production of the medieval play. He also meets a woman who soon becomes his mistress. Not long after that, he suffers a heart attack. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Detective C.G. (Klaus-Juergen Wussow) begins to investigate the death of an attractive woman (Heidelinde Weis) whose naked body was found in Beverly Hills. When he recovers her journal, he is taken into her past where he finds that she lead a sexually promiscuous life. Perhaps in the pages of the diary will be a clue to her killer's identity. This thriller was the first German feature to be shot in Hollywood after WWII as well as the first feature for German television director Michael Pfleghar. Based on a bestselling novel by Curt Goetz, Die Tote Von Beverly Hills/The Corpse of Beverly Hills was adapted to the screen only a few short years after his death. ~ Kristie Hassen, All Movie Guide

Co-produced and directed by Kurt Hoffmann, one of Germany's most prolific post-war directors, this drama was based on a popular novel by Kurt Tucholsky. Lydia and Kurt, a young couple from Hamburg, travel to Sweden for the holidays and stay at the well-known Gripshom Castle. There they are joined by Kurt's friend Karlchen and later by Lydia's friend, Billie--each of whom flirts with his/her friend's companion. The screenplay, by Herbert Reinecker, retains much of the original dialogue by Tucholsky--a strong point in the film as Tucholsky was known particularly for his witty and intelligent use of language, though much may be lost in translation. ~ Kristie Hassen, All Movie Guide

This overdone German film relies on a repetitive plot centered around bedroom antics worthy of daytime dramas. A call girl (Hildegard Knef) teaches the "ways of love" to a boy (Thomas Fritsch). The boy uses the knowledge to seduce the young wife (Alexandra Stewart) of his professor (Martin Held). Meanwhile, the professor carries on with his secretary (Daliah Lavi). The story continues in like fashion, with little else to give it strength. ~ Lucinda Ramsey, All Movie Guide

In this drama, set just after the Seven Years War, a soldier returns from the war in disgrace after he is accused of financial misconduct. His supportive fiancee consoles him, but his code of honor demands that he reject her as long as his good name is besmirched. In order to make him feel a little better, his fiancee claims that the engagement was broken because her family ridiculed her for loving him. This causes the soldier to tell the reason for his discharge. Later it is the army that finds a mistake and clears his name. Happily he finally marries his beloved. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Hampered by over-orchestrated music, smeary color photography and (in the English version at least) poor dubbing, this 1963 French/German adaptation of the Kurt Weill-Bertolt Brecht piece The Three Penny Opera nonetheless has its attractions. Not least of these is the central performance of Curt Jurgens as robber captain MacHeath, whose romance with Polly Peachum (June Ritchie), daughter of beggar king J. J. Peachum (Gert Frobe), puts his life in jeopardy. Hildegarde Neff has an effective cameo as whore-ish Pirate Jenny. For the film's American release, distributor Joseph E. Levine hired Sammy Davis Jr. to play the Ballad Singer, who narrates the story, introduces the scenes, and sings the opera's most famous song "Moritat (The Ballad of Mack the Knife)." Unlike the music in the rest of the film, Davis' rendition of "Mack the Knife" is rearranged in Bobby Darin "pop" fashion. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Sammy Davis, Jr., Curd Jürgens, (more)
