Director Joseph Vilsmaier's long-awaited biopic of screen legend Marlene Dietrich opens with the star's last public outing, her 1975 appearance at Carnegie Hall. Subsequently backtracking to 1929 Berlin, the film follows Dietrich's rise to fame and international adulation, turning a particularly attentive eye toward her relationship with director Josef von Sternberg (Hans-Werner Meyer) and her years in Hollywood. Screened at the 2000 Cannes Festival, Marlene stars Katja Flint in the title role and takes meticulous care in re-creating pre-WWII Berlin. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

A woman finds that her life is radically changed in a number of ways after a bout with cancer. Corinna (Renee Soutendijk) is a 38-year-old commercial artist and single mother who is happy with her life; her career is going well, her children are happy and healthy, and she's found a boyfriend who makes her happy. However, Corinna finds her contented existence turned upside-down when she discovers a malignant tumor in one breast and undergoes a mastectomy. Her boyfriend soon leaves her, and Corinna finds herself wondering about her future (and her kids' future as well) and if she'll still be attractive to men. The latter question begins to answer itself when she finds that two men are vying for her attentions. But while her new neighbor (Huub Stapel) seems interested in Corinna for her own sake, a good friend (Hans-Werner Meyer) takes a new interest in her and proposes marriage -- largely so her children will have a home should she fall ill again. Originally produced for German television, Hauptsache Leben was well-received on its home turf, where Renee Soutendijk earned enthusiastic notices for her performance as Corinna. The film received its American premiere at the 1999 Hollywood Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A writer is visited by one of his creations in this Austrian fantasy comedy. Crime novelist Robert David aspires to write "serious" literature. The heavy drinking writer's first attempt is an epic romance in which a daring hero (patterned after himself) is involved with a lovely, yet passive heroine, Sarah. One day, as Robert gazes into the hotel window across the street he sees a woman who is the perfect physical match of his Sarah. They meet and he is shocked to discover that her personality is the total opposite of his character's personality. Whereas the fictional Sarah is meek and gentle, the real one is fiery and independent. She wants to be no one's fantasy. Robert's friends see nothing amiss about the fact that a fictional person has magically come to life. When a police official threatens her, they valiantly rally 'round her. Apparently the cop is trying to get revenge on Robert, who slept with his wife, by having Sarah, a woman with no past and no documentation committed to an asylum. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
