A case of serendipity extends itself over many years in Italian director Silvio Muccino's bittersweet romantic drama Parlami d'amore (Let's Talk About Love). Aitana Sanchez-Gijon stars as Nicole, a quadragenarian housewife in a supremely dysfunctional marriage, and Silvio Muccino is Sasha, the twenty-year-old son of a drug-addicted mother and father; the pair meet when their cars crash one fateful evening and they accidentally injure a dog in the process. Taking the canine to a veterinary hospital, the two strangers sense a latent attraction to one another and swap phone numbers but (for unspoken reasons) refrain from calling each other for a lengthy period of time. In that interim, Sasha becomes unwisely attracted to a low-class girl with barrel-bottom standards; unacquainted with the young woman, Nicole offers Sasha advice that helps him win the girl's heart. In time, however, the new girlfriend drags Sasha into heavy gambling and unsavory company, and Sasha and Nicole subsequently begin to realize just how perfect the two of them are for one another. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

A serial killer with a knack for video poker and a taste for blood taunts a determined policewoman in director Dario Argento's attempt to bring the traditional giallo into the digital age. Detective Anna Mari (Stefania Rocca) is sitting at her desk when a message from an anonymous online gambler bearing the moniker "The Card Player" invites her to join a game of video poker. When the game screen loads, Mari is horrified to learn that the stakes of the game are higher than she ever could have imagined, as an unidentified female in an over-pixilated web-cam window screams for her life. Though the chief initially refuses to take part in the killer's horrifying game, the death of the innocent victim leads Mari to seek more unconventional means of tracking the murderous gambler. As the killer continues to taunt police, British policeman John Brennan (Liam Cunningham) is brought in to help solve the case. The feature debut of Roman Coppola (son of Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola) centers around an international film crew making a low-budget, Barbarella-like feature in Paris in 1969. The film is called Dragonfly and is being directed by Andrzej (Gérard Depardieu), who wishes to make a revolutionary work rather than the tacky fluff it is becoming. He is soon fired by the film's Italian producer Enzo (Giancarlo Giannini) when he can't produce a satisfactory climactic scene. After briefly replacing Andrzej with an American horrormeister named Felix DeMarco (Jason Schwartzman), the film's editor and second-unit director, the job is finally handed to Paul (Jeremy Davies). Paul is pleased with the offer, but more devoted to his 16 mm filming of his diary of daily life. He eventually begins to fall for the leading lady (Angela Lindvall), but must retrieve footage of the feature stolen by Andrezej and try to keep the troubled production together. Youthful idealism meets teenage lust in this teen comedy from Italy. A large group of teenage activists are occupying their high school as part of a protest against privatized education and efforts for greater standardization among students. But one of them, Silvio (Silvio Muccino), is more than a bit preoccupied by Valentina (Giulia Carmignani), a pretty girl in his class who unfortunately already has a boyfriend, Martino (Simone Pagani). One day, Silvio is hanging out with Valentina and Martino, and Martino steps away long enough for Silvio to kiss Valentina. Silvio then makes the mistake of telling his best friend Ponzi (Giuseppe Sanfelice di Monteforte) about it; soon the entire school knows, including a very angry Martino and an equally enraged Claudia (Giulia Steigerwalt), who has a crush on Silvio. As things get more complicated for him at school, Silvio is finding no respite at home; his parents (Anna Galiena and Luca De Flippo) want to know why they don't talk anymore, his brother (Enrico Silvestrin) needs romantic advice, and his sister (Giulia Ciccone) has a secret. To get a better feel for contemporary teenage life, writer/director Gabriele Muccino collaborated on the screenplay with two 16-year-olds, Silvio Muccino and Adele Tulli, both of whom have roles in the film. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
