A would-be North Korean defector still reeling over the killing of his family by the communist government when he was just a child determines to destroy the Korean peninsula in a tense, politically minded action thriller directed by Kwak Kyung-taek and starring Jang Dong-gun, Lee Jung-jae, and Lee Mi-yeon. When a vessel sailing a few hundred kilometers off the northeast port of Jt Long in Taiwan is hijacked by pirates and the National Intelligence Service learns that a nuclear guidance kit has been stolen, they quickly dispatch naval lieutenant Kang, Se-jong (Lee Jung-jae) to find out who was responsible for the deed and to bring him to justice. The criminal mastermind in question is Sin (Jang Dong-gun), a man who harbors a deep-rooted hatred for the Korean government due to a tragic event that took place in his childhood. As a young boy, Sin's family had tried to defect to South Korea. When they were turned away by a government who feared complicating their relationship with China, however, Sin watched as his parents were brutally executed and his only sister, Choi, Myung-ju (Lee Mi-yeon), was taken away. Upon learning that Sin currently resides in Russia, Lieutenant Kang travels to the Eastern European republic as the tragedy of Sin's past slowly comes into focus for the sympathetic military man. His mission to apprehend Sin is clear, though, and despite his personal feelings Lieutenant Kang remains determined to get his man by any means necessary. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

After creating an international sensation with the visually dazzling and intellectually challenging sci-fi blockbuster The Matrix, the Wachowski brothers returned with the first of two projected sequels that pick up where the first film left off. Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) have been summoned by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) to join him on a voyage to Zion, the last outpost of free human beings on Earth. Neo and Trinity's work together has been complicated by the fact the two are involved in a serious romantic relationship. Upon their arrival in Zion, Morpheus locks horns with rival Commander Lock (Harry J. Lennix) and encounters his old flame Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith). Meanwhile, Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) has returned with some surprises for Neo, most notably the ability to replicate himself as many times as he pleases. Neo makes his way to The Oracle (Gloria Foster), who informs him that if he wishes to save humankind, he must unlock "The Source," which means having to release The Key Maker (Randall Duk Kim) from the clutches of Merovingian (Lambert Wilson). While Merovingian refuses to cooperate, his wife, Persephone (Monica Bellucci), angry at her husband's dalliances with other women, offers to help, but only in exchange for a taste of Neo's affections. With The Keymaker in tow, Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus are chased by Merovingian's henchmen: a pair of deadly albino twins (Neil Rayment and Adrian Rayment). Filmed primarily in Australia and California (the extended chase scene was shot on a stretch of highway build specifically for the production outside of San Francisco), The Matrix Reloaded was produced in tandem with the third film in the series, The Matrix Revolutions. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Mr. Nice Guy opens on a darkened Australian warehouse full of seedy criminal types who have gathered to make a large-scale drug transaction. When it goes horribly wrong and bullets start flying, the hoods flee in different directions -- until one realizes an investigative reporter (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick) has caught the whole episode on video. If she gets the chance to air it on her top-rated news show, it could bring down a powerful crime family. As thugs begin chasing her, the reporter runs into a mild-mannered TV show chef named Jackie (Jackie Chan), whom her pursuers mistake for a cohort. After several thrilling escapes, the tape has accidentally changed hands, unknowingly swapped with a children's video Jackie was bringing to a family friend. As the criminals, dispatched by mob boss Giancarlo (Richard Norton), seek out both Jackie and the reporter for the tape, Jackie's visiting girlfriend (Miki Lee) and his assistant (Karen McLymont) get mixed up in the chase. Meanwhile, the bad guys will stop at nothing, including confronting Jackie on the set of a live cooking show and trying to blow up his apartment. An English-language Hong Kong import, Mr. Nice Guy was filmed after Chan finally earned stateside success with Rumble in the Bronx, but before he was recruited to Hollywood and the Rush Hour movies. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi
