William is married to Jillian (KaDee Strickland), and in addition to being unfaithful, he's also scheming to take over the role of COO at his mother's lucrative construction firm. Meanwhile, Alice's other daughter, Pam (Taraji P. Henson), and her husband, Ben (Perry), a faithful family man and construction worker, have both recognized that their family has strayed from the course of righteousness, and become determined to help their loved ones back on the right path. Writer/director Maurice Jamal follows up his debut feature, The Ski Trip, with this comedy about a gay man from the big city returning to his small Southern hometown. Rockmond Dunbar plays Sheldon, a New York magazine writer who has long left his roots behind. When he begrudgingly heads back to Georgia, cultures clash as the homosexual socialite reunites with the down-home folks of his youth. Formerly titled Crazy Lawyers, the weekly, 60-minute comedy drama series Head Cases got under way as Jason Payne (Chris O'Donnell), a former hotshot corporate attorney, emerged from three months' treatment at a wellness center after suffering a nervous breakdown, exacerbated by a bitter divorce. With no job prospects, the still-panicky Jason started up all over again in a private law practice, specializing in "underdog" cases. His new partner was another wellness-center "graduate," low-rent lawyer Russell Shultz (Adam Goldberg), who suffered from an embarrassing rage disorder that compelled him to punch out people without warning (and not much provocation!). In the pilot episode, Rachael Leigh Cook was introduced as Kate, another recovering neurotic whom Jason hoped to assist in readjusting to the outside world, but by the time the series proper premiered over the Fox network on September 14, 2005, Kate had been written out of the show. In her place, more or less, was Richard Kind as Lou Albertini, a mercurial paralegal who'd formerly been "employed" as a bank robber. Others in the cast were Krista Allen as Jason's ex-wife, Laurie; Jake Cherry as his eight-year-old son, Ryan; and Rockmond Dunbar as Jason and Russell's therapist, Dr. Robinson. Adapted from the acclaimed 1997 film of the same name, the Showtime series Soul Food revolves around the fortunes of the Joseph clan, a close-knit African-American family coping with the death of their beloved matriarch, Big Mama (Irma P. Hall, who also played the character on the big screen). Opening five months after Big Mama's death, the series begins with Big Mama's youngest daughter Bird (Malinda Williams), ready to give birth to her first child. After leaving the hospital, Bird returns home with her husband Lem (Darrin Dewitt Henson) and newborn son Jeremiah, and is dismayed to find her mother's household flooded and in disarray. She quickly finds herself arguing with her sisters Teri (Nicole Ari Parker) and Maxine (Vanessa Williams) over how to best handle the disaster. The series' first episode was directed by E.R.'s Eriq La Salle and executive produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and his wife, Tracey, who also produced the film version of Soul Food. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide
