Christopher Nolan steps back into the director's chair for this sequel to Batman Begins, which finds the titular superhero coming face to face with his greatest nemesis -- the dreaded Joker. Christian Bale returns to the role of Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger dons the ghoulishly gleeful Joker makeup previously worn by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. Just as it begins to appear as if Batman, Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are making headway in their tireless battle against the criminal element, a maniacal, wisecracking fiend plunges the streets of Gotham City into complete chaos. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A character drama from South Africa set in the apartheid era, After the Rain focuses on Steph (Paul Bettany), an Afrikaner soldier with more than his share of emotional problems. His girlfriend (Louise Lombard) is close friends with Joseph (Ariyon Bakare), and when Steph returns home one day to find the two in bed together, he immediately thinks the worst (even though their relationship is entirely platonic). Steph ties the two up, and forces them to listen to his hateful invective for the rest of the evening. After the Rain was written and directed by Ross Kettle, whose screenplay was adapted from his own play, Soweto's Burning. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Based on the novel by Philippa Gregory, the British miniseries A Respectable Trade was what is known in the business as a "bodice ripper." The story began in 1788, when well-bred governess Frances Scott (Emma Fielding) married her rough-hewn employer Josiah Cole (Warren Clarke). It didn't take long for Frances to become disgusted by the fact that her husband was in the slave-trading profession, and to take steps to get him out of the filthy business. Complicating matters was Frances' ever-increasing attraction to one of Josiah's "possessions," a handsome and cultured African slave named Mehuru (Ariyon Bakare). First broadcast over the BBC on April 19, 1998, the four-part A Respectable Trade was telecast in America as part of PBS Masterpiece Theatre anthology, beginning on October 25 of that same year. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
