Michael Landon Jr. directs this period drama set in 1850s Appalachia and concerning a young girl who carries a crushing burden. Ten-year-old Cadi Forbes' (Liana Liberato) sister has died as the result of a tragic accident, and now the surviving sibling can't help feeling somewhat responsible for her sister's untimely death. Desperate to shake the guilt she feels and absolve her dearly departed kin from her Earthly sins, Cadi seeks out the assistance of the one person rumored to have the power of achieving both goals -- the mysterious Sin Eater (Peter Wingfield). In the midst of her redemptive quest, however, young Cadi uncovers a malevolent secret that threatens to destroy her family and divide her tightknit community. Only after discovering the truth about Jesus Christ and the human condition does Cadi realize that there is only one man capable of providing absolution of sin, and the word of that man can only be found in the Holy Bible. Former TV Superman Dean Cain stars in this sci-fi horror film reminiscent of James Cameron's 1986 classic Aliens. Boa sets its action in the not-too-distant future, where volatile criminals are shipped off to a place called Facility Number One, a super-high-security prison located -- just to be safe -- in the distant, icy confines of Anarctica. What the prisoners and their wardens don't know, however, is that there's a presence more dangerous than all of them combined: A giant, prehistoric, flesh-eating snake, hibernating in the ground just underneath the facility. When the creature gets a whiff of what's going on above ground, the oversized boa decides it's time for a little light snacking, and the good and bad guys have to join together to escape the carnage. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide
At first, the made-for-cable melodrama Blood Crime seems determined to emulate the classic Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode "Revenge" -- but there's far, far more to it than that. Vacationing in the forest outside his native Seattle, city detective Daniel Pruitt (Johnathon Schaech) is stunned when his wife Jessica (Elizabeth Lackey) is sexually assaulted. While driving her to the hospital, Daniel collides with a semi, whereupon Jessica insists that the driver was her assailant. Blinded by his rage, Daniel jumps out of his car and pummels the other driver into unconsciousness. Upon arriving at the E.R., however, the hysterical Jessica changes her story, claiming that she was attacked by the male nurse taking care of her. Already distraught over the possibility that he has beaten up the wrong man, Daniel is in no mood to discover that his victim has died -- and that the dead man is the son of local sheriff Morgan McKenna (James Caan), who has his own peculiar ideas about justice and retribution. Keeping mum about his involvement in the case, Daniel is placed in the awkward position of investigating the death of McKenna's son. And then, evidence is unearthed suggesting that Daniel may not be a murderer after all. Filmed in New Zealand under the title The Wrong Man, Blood Crime premiered over the USA Network on September 13, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

If one didn't know better, one might suspect that the weekly, 60-minute PAX Network series Just Cause was really the theatrical feature Erin Brockovich with different clothes and characters. Richard Thomas headed the cast as celebrated civil attorney Hamilton Whitney III, who maintained a suite of posh offices in San Francisco. Whitney's sense of serenity and decorum was shattered when he hired feisty single mom Alex DeMonaco (Elizabeth Lackey) as a paralegal. Having been thrown into prison because of her ex-husband's financial shenanigans, Alex managed to get a law degree via the internet, but her trumped-up felony conviction prevented her from practicing law on her own. Thus she latched onto the uptight Whitney, and together these two wildly divergent crusaders set about to right all manner of wrongs and to tilt at the windmills of corporate greed and political corruption. Along the way, Alex endeavored to fully clear her name so that she could reclaim custody of her beloved daughter Mia. Just Cause debuted September 15, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
