Three privileged girls at a cloistered New England boarding school find their social lives thrown into turmoil by the arrival of a manipulative new student and an affair that spells the end of their innocence. With the arrival of fall, Fernanda (Rooney Mara) returns to Tanner Hall to complete her senior year. Fernanda has always been the most level-headed of her small trio of friends -- which also includes mischievous Kate (Brie Larson) and spitfire Lucasta (Amy Ferguson) -- though the unexpected appearance of embittered, emotionally damaged new girl Victoria (Georgia King) finds the subtle cracks in their longtime friendship suddenly beginning to show. Almost immediately after arriving at Tanner Hall, Victoria has managed to turn the three friends against one another. And by all appearances, she's just getting started as Fernanda finds herself increasingly drawn to Gio (Tom Everett Scott), a married family friend. A single thirtysomething whose friends all seem to be romantically involved, happily married, or with child meets an eccentric Frenchman who shows her just what an amazing place the world can truly be in director Zoe Cassavetes' entry into the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. As if it wasn't depressing enough to be 35 and still single, Nora (Parker Posey) is constantly reminded by her loving but tactless mother (Gena Rowlands) just how unlucky she has been in love. Though Nora longs to enter into a blissful union like the one of her best friend, Audrey (Drea de Matteo), she finds that the dating pool just isn't what it used to be. Things soon begin to look up, however, when Nora makes the acquaintance of handsome Frenchman Julian (Melvil Poupaud). While the two share an instant chemistry that is undeniable, Nora is saddened to learn that Julian will soon be departing for his native soil. When Julian does depart, Nora laments the fact that she wasn't able to express her feelings more effectively. If only Nora could organize her scattered thoughts long enough to remember her love object's last name, she might not have to go searching out every "Julian" in Paris to locate the man of her dreams. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

David (Mark Rosenthal) is standing on the roof ledge of a building in lower Manhattan, threatening to jump. Several of his friends try to convince him to safely get down from the ledge, that suicide is not the answer. But as they speak to him, the audience sees moments from the friends' lives in flashback. It becomes obvious that David's friends have lives every bit as sad and desperate as David's; with people like this as your support group, why shouldn't a man jump?
