Lucy Lawless Movies
Best known for her role as the fearsome Xena: Warrior Princess in the long-running series of the same name, athletic worldly beauty Lucy Lawless didn't achieve the fame in her native New Zealand that flooded her in the U.S. until much later in her career, due to the fact that the wildly popular adventure series didn't air there until long after it was a staple of American television.Born into water at her home in Mount Albert, Aukland, New Zealand, in 1968 to the mayor of that city, Lawless began acting early and frequently appeared in school plays in her youth. A active child of diverse interests and with many siblings, Lawless went on to study German, French, and Italian at Aukland University for a year before traveling through Europe with boyfriend and eventual first husband Garth. They worked odd jobs to finance their trip and eventually ending up in Australia. Working in a gold-mining camp in Kalgoorlie to finance the final leg of their journey, the couple was married in Australia in 1988 and soon returned home to bear a daughter.
Crowned Mrs. New Zealand the following year, the busy new mother got her first acting experience in Funny Business, a popular TV comedy troupe. Studying acting in Vancouver, Canada, at the William Davis Center for Actors Study, Lawless soon landed small roles in films (The End of Golden Weather [1991]) and television (For the Love of Mike [1991]), with her next regular job as of co-host on television's Air New Zealand Holiday. After appearing in The Rainbow Warrior in 1992, Lawless landed the role that would propel her to stardom and become her calling card into the new millennium.
Initially appearing in the role of Lysia in Hercules and the Amazon Women, Lawless went on to appear as Xena in three episodes of Hercules before spinning off into her own series in 1995. It was a physically demanding adventure series in which the sporty actress performed many of her own stunts; Lawless ironically broke her pelvis after falling off of a horse while preparing to make a grand entrance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in 1996. After a quick recovery, Lawless made her Broadway debut as Rizzo in Grease the following year. Her first marriage dissolved, Lawless was remarried to Xena producer Rob Tapert in October 1999, two years before the final episode of Xena. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Here Xena, Eve, and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) are surrounded by the armies of the warrior Athena (Paris Jefferson), who intends to kill Eve to appease the Olympian Gods. To extricate herself from her present dilemma, Xena must pull the wool over the eyes of war god Ares (Kevin Smith), who is a notoriously bad sport whenever someone tries to deceive him. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Picking up where season five of Xena: Warrior Princess left off, season six begins with Xena (Lucy Lawless) handily defeating the combined forces of the Olympian Gods, who had hoped to forestall their prophesied demise by killing both Xena and her reformed warrior-princess daughter, Eve (Adrienne Wilkinson). The end of Olympia left but a few survivors, among them Xena's old nemesis Ares (Kevin Smith), the God of War -- now rather comically reduced to pathetic mortal-hood. Together with her traveling companion, Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), and the ladies' new cohort, Virgil (William Gregory Lee), the son of their late friend Joxer, Xena embarks upon a whole new series of globetrotting adventures, taking her to Africa and to the Land of Norse, where she finds herself smack-dab in a Wagnerian "Ring Cycle" (mostly of her own making). Xena also does her best to avoid the prognostications of the Heavens Above that she is next in line to the Throne of Hell upon the "retirement" of reigning demon Mephistopheles. Occasionally digressing from the standard Xena format, a handful of episodes were set in the Present -- that is, the 21st century A.D. One of these was a satirical spoof of the old radio and TV series You Are There, while others dealt with the misadventures of Xena's contemporary fans and the familiar cast members' modern-day, lookalike descendants. The season ends with a two-parter set in faraway Japan, where Xena is voluntarily slain so that she may do battle in the Afterlife with the ghost of a malevolent samurai. Gabrielle's efforts to revive Xena, so often so successful in the past, come a cropper this time, and it looks as though Xena: Warrior Princess is definitely, permanently over and done with. However, hope is held out that a sequel or a spin-off may still be in the works, so stay tuned. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Callisto (Hudson Leick), the mortal enemy of warrior princess Xena (Lucy Lawless), has come back from Hades with a lot of mischief in mind. Callisto's plan involves placing the duplicitous Caesar (Karl Urban) on the emperor's throne and corrupting Xena. Not everything goes according to plan, but the dire predictions made by evil shamaness Atra in an earlier episode come to pass as the Roman legions prepare to crucify Xena and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor). Originally intending as the final episode of Xena: Warrior Princess' fourth season, "The Ides of March" ended up as next-to-last. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Taking one of Xena's offhand comments a bit too literally, Aphrodite (Alexandra Tydings) "helpfully" traps Xena (Lucy Lawless) into the body of Daphne (Rose McIver), a little girl on the verge of death. Once she has assumed Daphne's form, Xena struggles to restore the child's will to live, which she lost after the death of her mother. Forsaking the series' standard historical trappings, this episode takes place in 1999 A.D. A woman named Annie (Lucy Lawless), whose favorite TV series is (what else?) Xena: Warrior Princess, becomes convinced that she is herself reincarnated from Xena (who, need we add, is also played by Lucy Lawless). Her husband, Harry (Ted Raimi), who bears a striking resemblance to Xena's wanna-warrior friend Joxer, worries that Annie has lost her marbles. Harry consults a New Age psychologist named Mattie Merrill (Renee O'Connor) -- who is the living image of Xena's traveling companion, Gabrielle -- in hopes of finding out if Annie is just fantasizing. An expert in "past lives," Mattie begins probing her sources, and discovers some remarkable (and wholly unexpected) facts about both Annie and Harry. Originally slated to air in April of 1999, "Déjà Vu All Over Again" was ultimately rescheduled as Xena's fourth-season finale. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Obligingly, Ares sends Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) into another realm, there to engage in mortal combat with Mavicam. But the match is not as weighted in Xena's favor as it seems: She and the pacifistic Gabrielle are forced to share the same body, with one of the ladies materializing during the daytime, one at night. Since Mavicam is not so handicapped, it looks as though she will emerge victorious -- until her ego gets the better of her. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this light-hearted episode, runaway Princess Alecia (Olivia Tennet) refuses to return home to her father and stepmother. Since Alecia's stubbornness may have disastrous consequences, it is up to Xena (Lucy Lawless), Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), and Joxer (Ted Raimi) to win the little girl over by telling her fairy tales. The result is three different, highly self-serving variations of the "Cinderella" story, with some very unusual casting choices. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The messianic shaman Eli (Timothy Omundson) has successfully brought back Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) from the dead. But while Gabby seems none the worse for wear, the amnesiac Xena has returned with an entirely different personality; for one thing, she is far more concerned with pretty clothes than weaponry. In order to restore Xena to her normal self, a fragment from a broken silver-and-white chakram must be joined with its counterpart. Making this task well night impossible is the combined villainy of two war gods, Ares (Kevin Smith) and Kal (Antonio Te Maioho). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Season five of Xena: Warrior Princess begins on a bleak note, inasmuch as both the titular Xena (Lucy Lawless) and her traveling companion, Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), had been crucified by the Romans at the end of season four -- thereby fulfilling the prophecy of the evil shamaness Alti. As Xena and Gabrielle's friends Joxer (Ted Raimi), Amarice (Jennifer Sky), and Eli (Timothy Omundson) mournfully set about the task of recovering their bodies, a full-scale war rages between Heaven and Hell to claim the ladies' souls. And thanks to the perfidy of Xena's old enemy Callisto (Hudson Leick), the spirit of Gabrielle is veering dangerously toward the Demonic. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Upon returning from India with her friend Xena (Lucy Lawless), Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) is accosted by Zehra (Jennifer Ward-Leland), "Queen of the Cons." In league with another sharpster named Milo (Mark Hadlow), Zehra persuades Gabrielle to write a play about Xena's exploits, to be given a lavish and expensive world premiere. What Zehra doesn't reveal is that she intends to pull a "Max Bialystock," producing a sure-fire flop so that she won't have to pay back the play's many wealthy investors. In addition to its Mel Brooks trappings, this episode also features such esoterica as "Buffus the Bacchae Slayer" and "Dustinus Hoofmanus." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

On the last leg of her journey through India, Xena (Lucy Lawless) elicits the aid of Krishna (Rajiv Varma) to rescue Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) and Gabrielle's spiritual shaman, Eli (Timothy Omundson), from the King of the Demons. In the process, Xena learns of "The Way" -- that is, the manner in which the lives of humans are predestined to go along certain paths, even when those humans have no idea what those paths are. After complaints from a splinter religious group, this episode was withdrawn from Xena: Warrior Princess' U.S. syndicated package, and was never shown at all in the U.K. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

It sure looked like curtains for Xena: Warrior Princess at the end of the series' fourth season, what with both Xena (Lucy Lawless) and her traveling companion, Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), being crucified by the Romans, the fulfillment of a prophecy by the evil shamaness Alti (Claire Stansfield). But given the amazing recuperative power of our heroines, both of whom had spectacularly arisen from the dead on previous occasions, it came as no surprise during season five that reports of their permanent demise were highly exaggerated. But though Xena and Gabrielle are eventually restored to the land of the living, they still have their share of trials and tribulations. Impregnated under mysterious circumstances, Xena gives birth to a daughter named Eve, an "immaculate conception" tied in with Gabrielle's devotion to the martyred prophet Eli (Tim Omundson). It soon develops that Eve has been targeted for extermination by the Olympian Gods, the result of a prophecy that the girl's birth would be the beginning of the end of the Gods' rule over Earth. As for Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), she is afforded the opportunity to ascend to the throne of Queen of the Amazons -- but this honor may require her to inflict heavy and horrible punishment upon her old friend Joxer (Ted Raimi). Joxer truly becomes "old" rather suddenly two-thirds of the way through the fifth season -- in fact, in one fell swoop 25 years pass by, during which both Xena and Gabrielle are in a state of suspended animation, frozen in a block of ice. Upon thawing out, the ladies discover that their old adversary Ares (Kevin Smith), God of War, has a powerful new ally: Fierce female warrior Livia, "The Bitch of Rome." Xena is disheartened to learn that Livia is none other than her own, grown-up daughter Eve (Adrienne Wilkinson), with whom she may be forced into mortal combat for the good of humankind. As in past years, season five bade goodbye to some familiar characters while introducing new ones. The most significant farewell was that of Joxer, who dies at Livia/Eve's hands. But the spirit of Joxer lives on, figuratively speaking, in the form of his stalwart son, Virgil (William Gregory Lee). Also in the tradition of previous seasons, the fifth-year run of Xena: Warrior Princess ended with a cliffhanger. This time around, Xena engaged in hand-to-hand combat against the Olympian Gods, with the fate of all the combatants remaining in the balance until the beginning of season six. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
