The childhood friendship between four lifelong friends is unexpectedly rekindled after one of them kills a notorious drug dealer and the rest of the group conspires to cover up the crime. Beer-guzzling widower Bobby Stork was locked into a downward spiral of depression when he ran across his old pal Mark Van Houten -- an unemployed doctor who now pays the bills by cooking up crystal meth. Upon relaying Mark's dilemma to their mutual friends, uptight Laith Rukkab and expectant father Hutto, the three pals agree that they need to snap their old friend back to reality before it's too late. In order to do so, Bobby, Laith, and Hutto agree to present Mark with the throwing stars that the four friends used to play with back when they were kids. Mark's best customer is a notorious drug dealer and animal porn producer named Reed, and when Laith and Bobby pass Reed's car on the way to deliver the throwing stars, they can't resist the opportunity to free the unwilling "actors" that are locked inside. But somehow, in the midst of the confusion, Laith drops one of the throwing stars in Reed's car.

Enraged by the break-in and infuriated by the fact that Mark hasn't finished cooking up his latest batch of meth, Reed notices a throwing star on Mark's table and assumes that he's found the person responsible for the break-in. In a fit of rage, Reed tries to murder Mark. But Mark is armed with a throwing star, and somehow manages to kill his attacker with a well-aimed throw. With precious little time to loose before the authorities catch on, Bobby, Laith, and Hutto go to work in helping get rid of the evidence and cook up a foolproof alibi. But these kind of cover-ups rarely go off without a hitch, and over the course of this eventful night these four friends will be forced to contend with an especially mischievous monkey as they each come to some startling realizations about the unexpected directions that their lives have taken as of late. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

In trying to help the enchanted threesome, Paige (Rose McGowan) is herself transformed into a nymph -- and she may not be allowed to reassume her human form. Charlie Kate Birch (Gena Rowlands) is a peculiarly powerful Southern matriarch, an anachronism in the early 20th century. She's a self-educated woman who makes a good living as a midwife and holistic healer. One day, she saves a black man who's been lynched, and he thanks her by giving her a rabbit's foot, which supposedly "brings an easy life" to the person who carries it. Charlie's husband leaves her soon thereafter, but she had begun to think he was an idiot anyway. Charlie's only character flaw seems to be her attraction to unworthy men, and she passes that trait on to her daughter, Sophia (Mimi Rogers). Sophia's husband is an unfaithful lout, and he dies an early death, leaving Charlie, Sophia, and her daughter, Margaret (Susan May Pratt of 10 Things I Hate About You) to fend for themselves, which they do admirably. Soon, Sophia has another suitor, a divorced lawyer named Richard Baines (Geordie Johnson). Unlike her mother, Sophia has remained a romantic soul, and she loves Richard, and waits patiently for him to propose to her. Charlie, meanwhile, has an ongoing feud with the alcoholic town doctor, and tries to be a more cerebral influence on Margaret. But when, during World War II, Margaret falls in love with Tom Hawkings (Ken Mitchell), a wounded soldier, Charlie realizes that they're a perfect match. Charms for the Easy Life was adapted by screenwriter Angela Shelton (Tumbleweeds) from a novel by Kaye Gibbons. As Shakespearean adaptations go, it's not quite as odd as moving The Tempest to another planet (as in Forbidden Planet) or Hamlet to a Canadian brewery (the secret subtext of Strange Brew), but it's still safe to say no one was expecting a version of The Taming of the Shrew set in an American high school. But unlike the previously mentioned films, 10 Things I Hate About You at least gives the Bard screen credit for his contribution to the story. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) is a tenth grader who has never gone on a date, as her parents have a little rule where Bianca isn't allowed to go out with boys until her older sister gets a boyfriend. The problem is, while her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) is attractive and intelligent, she's also a mean-spirited misanthrope who rubs nearly everyone the wrong way -- especially boys. But Bianca and the guy she has her eye on, Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan), are eager to get their romance on the road, so Joey fixes Kat up with Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), a new kid in town who may be just bitter and mysterious enough to suit her. 10 Things I Hate About You is the first feature film for director Gil Junger, who previously worked extensively in television, including episodes of Dharma and Greg, Ellen, and Blossom. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Director Barbet Schroeder and screenwriter Ted Tally adapted the novel by Rosellen Brown into this intriguing drama that, while heavily criticized for a third-act revelation that is something of a cop-out, nevertheless features -- typically of Schroeder's work -- compelling performances, domestic discord, and a search for the truth. Meryl Streep stars as Carolyn Ryan, a rural Massachusetts pediatrician married to Ben (Liam Neeson), a handsome, rugged sculptor. Although theirs is not a picture-perfect marriage, the Ryans consider themselves happy, until police arrive at their home one morning to inform them that their son Jacob (Edward Furlong) was the last person seen the night before with a teenage girl who has been murdered. Jacob is missing, and the Ryans frantically search for him, but when the boy returns, it is obvious that he's not being completely truthful about the night's events. While Carolyn wants the truth, Ben is willing to go to whatever lengths are necessary to defend Jacob, hiring an expensive lawyer (Alfred Molina), destroying evidence, and encouraging Jacob to be deceitful. Carolyn and Ben's opposing views of their son's legal trouble cause serious turmoil in the Ryans' marriage, which may be irreparably harmed in spite of the 11th hour appearance of the truth. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
