A same-sex couple puts their long-term relationship to the test as they negotiate the mechanics of having a baby in this German comedy. Sandra (Nicole Ansari) and Iris (Eva Gerzig) are a lesbian couple who have been partners for the past eight years. However, their relationship has hit a rough patch, and Iris thinks that they need something to solidify their commitment -- specifically, she wants to have a child. Sandra, an architect who is strongly devoted to her career, isn't so sure that this is a good idea, but Iris is convinced and begins pondering possible sperm donors. One day, Iris has a chance meeting with Antonio (Ralf Bauer), a friendly and good-looking man, and decides he's the right guy for the job. Sandra, however, is initially dubious since Antonio is one of her co-workers, and one she considers a rival. Instead of bringing Sandra and Iris together, the debate over Antonio only widens the rift between them. In time, Iris decides to take up with her friend Rosie (Viktoria Schubert), while Sandra indulges her love/hate relationship with Antonio by having a baby herself, with him as the donor. Zwei Frauen, Ein Mann und Ein Baby had its American premier at the 2001 San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival; an English-dubbed version was prepared for possible wide release in the United States. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
