Ram Gopal Varma directs this violent crime biopic inspired by the true life tale of Indian political leader Paritala Ravi, whose fierce reputation inspired paralyzing fear in both the authorities and his longtime nemesis Suri. Hero to some and villain to others, Ravi rose to power after his father and brother were both slain as sociopolitical turmoil gripped their country. Later, during his rise to power, Ravi would prove an especially hard man for his rivals to kill. In 2005, however, Ravi's violent history caught up with him when he was assassinated in broad daylight by a team of hired killers purportedly organized by Suri, who had vowed revenge following the brutal murder of his own father and brother at the hands of his rival's faction. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A slick, unofficial Hindi-language update of The Godfather that is drenched in Bollywood stylistic tropes, Sarkar Raj (2008) constitutes a sequel to the 2005 crime saga Sarkar. Like its predecessor, it tells the story of Subhash Nagare (Amitabh Bachchan), a powerful crime lord who controls the region of Mumbai, ensuring that raw justice gets dispensed where the law proves ineffectual. Wise, self-controlled, and outwardly gentle, he is nevertheless capable of shattering violence at the right time and place. As the tale opens, a western corporation swoops in and tries to persuade Subhash and his son Shankhar (Abhishek Bachchan) to give their permission for clearing the residents out of a particular area and building a power plant. Shankhar feels completely enthusiastic about the proposal, his father a bit more skeptical. But most furious about the matter is the son of a diminutive spiritual leader, Sanjay Somji (Rajesh Shringarpore), who resents everything that the plan entails, and does everything in his power to raise the ire of the people and stop it. All is not what it seems on the surface, however, for beneath the plans lurk deeper and more sinister, hidden motivations and schemes on the part of those involved. Meanwhile, one of the representatives of the said corporation, the svelte and gorgeous Anita Rajan (Aishwarya Rai), begins to fall for Shankhar, and he develops reciprocal feelings for her. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

In the footsteps of Lolita and Starting Out in the Evening comes Indian director Ram Gopal Varma's age-disparity romance Nishabd. Bollywood mainstay Amitabh Bachchan stars as Vijay, a sexagenarian photographer and family man who makes a fated encounter with his daughter Ritu's (Shradha Arya) best friend, the Australian Indian Jia (Jiah Khan), during the latter's guest stay at his home. When Ritu grows unexpectedly ill, Vijay (sensing a definite attraction to Jia and possible reciprocation) offers to squire the young woman around town and introduce her to the local sights. The older man instantly falls for the younger woman, and she feels utterly enchanted by his laconic ways and easy confidence about the world around him. Vijay's wife and daughter, of course, aren't so understanding, and the relationship splits the family in half. As the lovers contemplate their course of action, Vijay's son, Shridar (Nasser) and Jia's (smitten) male friend, Rishi, each turn up and try to convince the pair to end things. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
