Animal rights activists free a group of infected chimpanzees to horrifying results in this speculative sci-fi horror effort from Trainspotting director Danny Boyle. Waking from a coma in a deserted London hospital 28 days later, bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) takes to the deserted city streets in a state of mystified confusion. Joining forces with another group of survivors following a terrifying encounter in a seemingly abandoned church, Jim soon learns the truth behind the deserted streets and the menacing creatures that lurk in the shadows. It's soon revealed that the chimpanzees had been harboring a deadly virus that sends its victims into a furious, murderous rage, and in the days following the initial exposure, the entire population was nearly wiped out due to the resulting homicidal rampage. Is there still a glimmer of hope for humanity -- or has the deadly "rage" virus found its way to foreign shores and infected the entire planet? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

What if virtual reality wasn't just for fun, but was being used to imprison you? That's the dilemma that faces mild-mannered computer jockey Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) in The Matrix. It's the year 1999, and Anderson (hacker alias: Neo) works in a cubicle, manning a computer and doing a little hacking on the side. It's through this latter activity that Thomas makes the acquaintance of Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who has some interesting news for Mr. Anderson -- none of what's going on around him is real. The year is actually closer to 2199, and it seems Thomas, like most people, is a victim of The Matrix, a massive artificial intelligence system that has tapped into people's minds and created the illusion of a real world, while using their brains and bodies for energy, tossing them away like spent batteries when they're through. Morpheus, however, is convinced Neo is "The One" who can crack open The Matrix and bring his people to both physical and psychological freedom. The Matrix is the second feature film from the sibling writer/director team of Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, who made an impressive debut with the stylish erotic crime thriller Bound. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Charlatan Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) has genuine psychic powers, but he doesn't use them to help people. Rather, he generates cases for his supernatural private-eye firm by harassing a group of hapless ghosts (including a dearly departed Wild West outlaw and an undead judge played by John Astin) into staging hauntings and poltergeists in the homes of likely marks. Bannister's world turns on its head when he starts noticing real hauntings around town -- ghostly assassinations that seem to be tied to the execution 20 years earlier of a brutal serial killer. Lucy Lunskey (Trini Alvarado), the wife of one unlucky victim, teams up with Bannister to get to the bottom of the killings and find out what shut-in Patricia Bradley (Dee Wallace Stone) and her witchy mother (Julia McCarthy) have to do with the sinister spree. ~ Brian J. Attending a reunion of Jason's Argonauts in Corinth, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and Iolaus (Michael Hurst) discover, to their dismay, that the once mighty King Jason (Jeffrey Thomas), devastated by the bloody unpleasantness involving his bride Medea and their children, has become a dissolute drunkard. Worse still, the Blood-Eyes, a Hera-worshipping cult, have stolen the precious Golden Fleece. With Hercules' encouragement, Jason and the Argonauts set sail again to retrieve the Fleece and restore Jason's self-respect -- and along the way they encounter a familiar-looking band of skeleton warriors. In his last regular TV series, British comic actor Norman Rossington starred as Norman Tripper, the harried manager of Supafare, a suburban London supermarket. The six half-hour episodes focused upon Tripper's tipplings with his inept coworkers and his contentious customers. Debuting September 24, 1984, Tripper's Day was seen on ITV's Thames Television service until October 29 of the same year. A second season of episodes was planned, but the death of Norman Rossington necessitated a cast change and a new title, Slinger's Day. Created by Brian Cooke, the series served as the basis for the Canadian-American sitcom Check It Out, which starred Don Adams. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This British sitcom starred Robin Bailey as henpecked librarian Henry Nunn. The hero's dismal existence brightened considerably when he learned that he had inherited a house in the town of Stackley, formerly owned by his late Uncle Crispin. Since it was in this house that Henry spent the happiest years of his life, he jumped at the chance of moving back in -- and, incidentally, welcomed the opportunity to leave his dead-end job and his nagging wife Sybil (Pamela Manson) behind. The rest of the series dealt with Henry's efforts to come to terms with the somewhat provincial citizens of Stackley, and vice versa. Sorry, I'm a Stranger Here Myself was broadcast by ITV in 13 half-hour increments; the first batch of seven was shown from June 15 to July 27, 1981, while the final six aired from April 13 to May 18, 1982. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Created by Peter Tilbury, the British sitcom Shelley starred Hywel Bennett as the title character, a brilliant but habitually unemployed college dropout. Living with his girlfriend Fran (Brenda Sinclair) in a flat managed by the garrulous Mrs. Hawkins (Josephine Hewson), Shelley spent his waking hours expounding on the state of humanity, usually by recording his thoughts for posterity on a dictating machine. But the hero could not be bothered to go out and look for work, not even after wedding Fran and becoming the father of a bouncing baby girl. The first 39 half-hour episodes of Shelley were broadcast by Thames Television from July 12, 1979 to January 12, 1984. The series resurfaced on October 11, 1988, appropriately retitled The Return of Shelley. The premise: Having returned from a five-year teaching stint in the United States, Shelley fully expected to resume sponging off his hardworking wife Fran. Instead, she booted him out of their flat, forcing Shelley to fend for himself, which he did for an additional 32 episodes, the last of which aired on September 1, 1992. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Not to be confused with the similarly titled British series of the late '60s, Whodunnit? was a semi-satirical panel show, in which celebrities were asked to solve a variety of fictional mysteries, usually homicidal in nature. The series was created by Jeremy Lloyd and Lance Percival, both of whom had solid credentials as gag writers and comic performers. Among the regular panelists were Doctor Who's Jon Pertwee and future Equalizer star Edward Woodward, but the most famous of the celebrity participants was Patrick Mower -- who, according to British TV folklore, was dismissed from the series because he provided far too many correct solutions (nobody likes a wise guy). Introduced with a pilot episode on August 15, 1972, Whodunnit? officially premiered on June 25, 1973, remaining on the air until 1978. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
