The emotional ups and downs of the habitués of a Copenhagen watering hole form the basis of this Danish drama. The Blue Monk is a bar favored by jazz fans, where classic sides by Thelonious Monk dominate the jukebox and the regulars use the waitresses and bartenders as sounding boards for their emotional problems. One of the customers develops a crush on his favorite waitress; however, she's become involved with someone else, and she soon discovers her customer isn't as harmless as she thought. This mood piece, dominated by a classic jazz soundtrack, was shown at the 1999 Gothenburg Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Street waif Sally (Jane Eggertsen) hides out on the seventeenth floor of a modern Danish tenement, hence the film's title. She almost manages to make a living recycling various trash items. In this way, she avoids the dangers of street life. Sally comes into contact with an equally streetwise Turkish immigrant girl (Mia El Mousti) with a talent for playing the accordion. The two join forces as street musicians. They have fun and make good money, but the good times are ended when the Turkish girl's parents take her back home for an arranged marriage. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Eleven-year old Rikke (Christina Haagensen) lives alone with her father, whose only interest in life seems to be the soccer matches which appear on his television. Not surprisingly, Rikke is somewhat bored. She enters a contest put on by a cereal company which has as its grand prize a horse. Since she lives in the city in a second floor apartment, it never occurred to her that she might win, but win she does. The horse (named "Mama-Mia") duly appears, and she and the members of her slum neighborhood come together to cope with the situation in a delightful way. One of the first things they do is rechristen the horse, so it is now called Tarzan Mama-Mia. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this suspenseful chase movie, a couple try to outrun both the police and the gangsters who are after them for a murder they did not commit. Suzanne (Pernille Falck) dreads yet another dull weekend in the country with her rich parents but is unprepared for what lies just ahead. Leonard, an escaped convict, is in desperate need of food and a car, and Suzanne happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time -- she ends up providing him with both and is taken with him as he makes his motorized getaway. In-between escaping the men who are chasing them, Suzanne and Leonard find time to take advantage of their growing physical attraction, although their romantic interludes are destined to be offset by unexpected trauma as Leonard inadvertently commits a crime that cannot be erased or ignored. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Heavy-handed direction by Ole Roos has taken away any subtlety that might have otherwise promoted the symbolism and dramatic intention of this film about two army men gone AWOL on a New Year's eve in 1945. The men have just come back from the Russian front and are now in hiding both from their German army superiors as well as the Danish resistance fighters. They take refuge in a small cottage for awhile, where a young Jewish woman helps to patch up a wound suffered by one of the men in their flight. Soon a romantic pairing begins to take over the story, which still focuses on obvious psychological hang-ups, maudlin melodrama, and visual symbols that can be a puzzle at times. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this engaging children's movie, a little boy named Topper (Kristjan Markersen) has a magic pencil that brings to life anything he draws on his apartment's walls. This helps him fend off the loneliness of an absent father, taken away for long periods by his work at sea. Everything seems to come to life when a bright yellow rhino drawn by Topper walks off the wall and eats vast quantities of dark bread and hay as a regular diet. Like most newborns, he loves those who feed him and pay him some kind attention but has no truck with the nasty innkeeper (Axel Stroebye) downstairs. Topper and the innkeeper's son Viggo (Erik Petersen) are the best of friends, enjoying life together as they go around town in an old children's stroller that they alternately push or ride. Although the innkeeper is after the magic pencil and makes life as miserable as he can for the young boys, he is inevitably thwarted in the end. Both charming and technically adroit, the fantasy and reality portrayed in the film would be entertaining for parents as well as children. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this crime drama, the first story told is that of four young delinquents whose exploits lead them on an ever-spiralling downward path, from robberies to murders. The parallel story, showing how a weary crew of policemen slowly put together the evidence needed to apprehend the delinquent foursome, is told last. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
