Director Michael A. Goorjian's Illusion tells the tale of a dying film director who, after leading a lavish life of fame and fortune, finds out too little too late what it truly means to live and be loved. Mr. Baines (Kirk Douglas) is a Hollywood icon who has agreed to grant one final interview before drifting into that good night. As Mr. Baines drifts wearily in and out of consciousness throughout the course of the interview, his long deceased editor returns to join him in going back over the footage of his life. While Mr. Baines never married, he did father an illegitimate son named Christopher (Goorjian) whom he abandoned as a child and never returned to. Now, on the screen before him, Mr. Baines watches mournfully as the tragic life of his long lost son plays out to its devastating conclusion. Upon viewing the heartbreaking footage Mr. Baines begins to realize that it was his own cowardice that ultimately fed his son's crippling sense of worthlessness and cemented the boy's grim fate. Despite Christopher's lifelong love of his childhood sweetheart Isabelle, an endless series of fateful mishaps constantly seemed to prevent the boy from finding true happiness with the ethereal beauty. As the film of Christopher's life careens towards tragedy time and again, the dying director implores his faithful editor to allow him the final cut that will save the picture. Johnny Twenties (Gibson Frazier) is a man who lives up to his name; from his snazzy suits to his snappy lingo, Johnny is a walking embodiment of the era when liquor was illegal, swing was being born, and the movies were just learning to talk. There's just one problem -- Johnny is living in New York City in the late 1990s, and he seems to have no idea that he's a man out of his era. When not courting his girlfriend Samantha (Susan Egan), who's not sure what to make of her beau's time-warp personality, Johnny does battle with a vicious gangster and his thugs. Man of the Century was written by leading man Gibson Frazier and director Adam Abraham, and features supporting performances from comic/impressionist Frank Gorshin and jazz pianist Bobby Short. While subbing for Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) in a golf tournament, Will (Will Smith) becomes closer than ever to his Uncle Philip (James Avery). Not surprisingly, Carlton is jealous, and does everything he can to sabotage Will's performance on the links. In a similar development, Ashley (Tatyana M. Ali) and Vivian (Daphne Maxwell Reid) find the competition tougher than expected during a tennis match. And in the episode's "money" scene, Hilary (Karyn Parsons) manages to get on the bad side of Regis Philbin when she sits in for Reege's TV cohost Kathie Lee Gifford. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
