Director Xavi Puebla offers a bitter satire of international business practices with this tale of corporate ambition centering on the competition for a prime human resources position at a major pharmaceuticals firm. When the head of Farewell-Gutmann's human resources department dies, Lazaro (Adolfo Fernandez), Adela (Ana Fernandez), and Fernando (Lluis Soler) all start to jockey for position within the company. Lazaro projects a larger than life image despite the fact that he is broken on the inside, Adela overcompensates for the pain of her personal life by being an obsessive worker, and Fernando is more than willing to bend the rules in order to advance his career. As depressive, alcoholic divorcee Lazaro attempts to land his former brother-in-law Santiago (Pep Anton Munoz) a job at the firm under the agreement that Santiago will help engineer a romantic reunion between the former spouses, Adela interviews epileptic Martin (Sergio Caballero) for the same position and Fernando considers hiring pretty Ukranian immigrant Nadia (Marta Novotna). Crippled by grief, Lucia sinks into a mire of self-pity. Meanwhile, instead of demonstrating sympathy, Lucia's daughter, Alba (Maria Salas), grows indignant over her mother's sudden weakness and dependency. When the two divorcees meet by chance in a hotel bar, they form a fast bond that soon turns serious when Ruben proposes marriage. Max (Fernando Fernán Gómez), the wealthy family patriarch and head of a pharmaceuticals business, is dying of cancer and has relocated from Madrid to a Paris hospital for treatment. The members of his family, including his wife, Marie (Geraldine Chaplin), have gathered around him there. Victor (Leonardo Sbaraglia), the youngest son and last to arrive in Paris, lives in Argentina and has no ties to the family business. He sees Max, who is becoming incoherent and confused, secretly throwing away his medicine, pretending to sleep, and attempting to escape from the hospital. Victor notices that Max appears to be afraid of something, but he can't tell if his fear is well founded or if he is just delusional. Paloma finds herself drawn to Mario as she struggles with him to regain his past. However, when several men with guns arrive at the hospital one day looking for Mario, she realizes that the life he can't recall may have been darker and more dangerous than she imagined. Maria (Ana Fernandez), whose parents live in the country, cannot stand her father's authoritarian ways and moves to the city. She finds a job as a cleaner and tries to survive in a wretched apartment in the shabby part of a big city. She is pregnant, and the fact that her boyfriend has abandoned her does not help matters. When her father goes to the hospital for an operation, her mother comes to stay with her. Her neighbor, an old recluse whose only friend is his dog, begins to come out of his shell and these three lost souls try to give each other (and especially Maria) the strength to start over.
