Spoof series torch-bearer and Airplane! mastermind David Zucker steps back into the captain's chair for yet another round of cinematic shenanigans in the latest installment of the Scary Movie franchise, this time mocking such frightful blockbusters as Saw, War of the Worlds, The Village, and The Grudge. An alien invasion threatens to wipe out the entire human race, but not if Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) and her nymphomaniac pal Brenda Meeks (Regina Hall) have any say in the matter. With the clock counting down for all of humankind and the extraterrestrial invasion about to begin, the fearless but slightly dunderheaded heroines are joined by a series of celebrity guests including Dr. Phil, Carmen Electra, Chris Elliot, Shaquille O'Neal, and, of course, Leslie Nielsen in ensuring that the planet remains free of the alien menace and prepared for yet another installment in the over-the-top, pop-culture deflating satire series. Something of a modern-day Lenny Bruce, the hardcore comedian Dave Attell first became notorious for his blue standup act, which not only landed him frequent guest spots on Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart but brought him his own series on that network, Insomniac with Dave Attell. A candid reality show, with Attell touring various late-night locales in a variety of cities and ad-libbing on-camera, Insomniac explores the odd ways in which footloose urbanites while away the better part of their sleeping hours, and functions as a reckless travelogue of night-owl America. The home release Dave Attell's Insomniac Tour Presents Sean Rouse, Greg Giraldo and Dane Cook carries Attell back to his standup comedy roots. Per its title, the 98-minute program features extended standup acts from Attell, Rouse, Giraldo, and Cook, delivering comedy at their raunchy, uncensored best. This comic spoof is spun off from a character that first appeared on The Chris Rock Show, and is written and directed by Louis C.K., one of that show's producers. Lance Crouther stars as Pootie Tang, a crime fighting superhero and recording artist who speaks in an unintelligible gibberish that seems to be a combination of Ebonics and street slang. Despite his communication problem, Pootie is a hero to children, whom he attempts to protect from the evil Dick Lecter (Robert Vaughn), a corporate fat cat out to corrupt America's youth with alcohol, tobacco, and junk food. Writer/director Mitch Hedberg makes his feature-film debut with this comedy about working stiffs in Minneapolis. Hedberg stars in Los Enchiladas! as Lee, a prep cook at a Mexican-style chain restaurant near a Twin Cities shopping mall. While Lee is something less than ambitious and doesn't take well to responsibility, he finds it thrust upon him when his shift manager takes a powder and the head chef decides it's time to leave the restaurant and pursue his dream -- writing menus for other people. Meanwhile, Lee has to deal with cranky co-workers and even crankier customers as the day wears on. Los Enchiladas! was shown at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
