What was supposed to be a relaxing long weekend of trout fishing in the wilderness quickly descends into a bloody battle for survival when a pair of over-stressed urbanites cross a reclusive survivalist looking to elude the law in Virginia's Great Dismal Swamp. All Bill Matherson (William Gregory Lee) and Matt Murphy (Scott Miles) wanted was a chance to break their daily routine and catch a few fish. Between Bill's top-of-the-line gear and Matt's comprehensive knowledge of nature, the pair seemed perfectly poised for a peaceful weekend retreat. Though everything starts out well enough, events quickly take a turn for the worst when their gear and canoe both go missing and the pair is forced to fend for themselves in the vast wilderness. Though under normal circumstances they would likely be well equipped to do so, Bill and Matt are soon faced with a variety of obstacles both otherworldly and manmade. From deep in the forest, a human predator named Croaker Norge (Richard Riehle) watches their every move. A dangerous fugitive whose extensive knowledge of the land allows him to skillfully stalk his prey from afar, Norge is ready and willing to do whatever it takes to remain undetected. When Bill and Matt's worried wives convince police and rangers to launch an extensive search for the pair after sensing that something has gone awry, the two would-be weekend warriors are suddenly thrust into a tense battle of wills that constantly shifts from the physical to the psychological, and seems to pit them against something much more deadly than a simple survivalist. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A high school football coach finds himself fighting for stakes much higher than the State Championship in this drama based on actual events. In 1971, a court order forces three high schools in Alexandria, Virginia (two white, one African-American), to integrate their student bodies and faculties for the first time. As a result, Coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton), longtime head coach of the T.C. Williams High School football team, is asked to step down, and Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is appointed to replace him as the school's first black faculty member. The new coach is hardly welcomed with open arms, either by the school's staff or the students, and the newly integrated team is full of players (both black and white) who have little trust or respect for one another. But Boone is determined to put a winning team on the field -- it's how he approaches the game, and his future depends on it. Against long odds, Boone helps his team overcome distrust and misunderstanding of their coach (and each other) as they become a gridiron force to be reckoned with. Remember the Titans also features Nicole Ari Parker, Kate Bosworth, and Jerry Brandt, and was produced by action-film kingpin Jerry Bruckheimer. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Eager to assume his first command, Ensign Kim (Garrett Wang) jumps at the chance to take charge of a Kraylor medical ship. In addition to the customary duties as skipper, Kim is also (apparently) responsible for the future of an entire alien race. Unfortunately, the euphoria of power is too much for Kim, whose judgment is seriously clouded by his insistence upon having his every order obeyed without question. NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam, Jr.'s autobiography provided the basis for this drama about a teenager coming of age at the dawn of the space race. In 1957, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high school student in Coalwood, West Virginia when the Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. While most of his friends and neighbors react with fear or distrust, Homer is instantly fascinated and begins studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. While many of Homer's friends are puzzled by his new obsession, several new friends share his enthusiasm, and with the encouragement of his teacher (Laura Dern), Homer and his fellow "Rocket Boys" begin designing and launching their own homemade missiles. However, Homer's father (Chris Cooper) takes a dim view of his son's interest in rockets and is convinced Homer's future should be the same as his own, working in the local coal mines. October Sky mixes the drama of traditional family conflicts with a nostalgic glimpse of life in the mid-50's and a look at the earliest days of our journey into space. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
