Chris (Jamie Bell of Billy Elliot) is a volatile teen who lives with his father, John (Dermot Mulroney), and his little brother, Tim (Devon Alan). After the death of Chris' mother, his reclusive father moved the family to a shack in backwoods Georgia, where they raise hogs. Tim has an unusual eating disorder. He is constantly making himself sick by eating things like dirt and paint. One day, John's estranged brother, Deel (Josh Lucas), gets out of prison and shows up on the farm. John is less than thrilled to see him, but agrees to let him stay with the family as long as Deel helps him look after his boys. Chris is drawn to his wild-man uncle, but it soon becomes clear that Deel has more on his mind than a family reunion. Greed and years of resentment lead to violence, and Chris finds himself on the run, towing his sickly brother along, with Deel in pursuit. Undertow is writer/director David Gordon Green's third feature film, and features many of the same crew as his previous films, George Washington and All the Real Girls, including cinematographer Tim Orr. Green, who co-wrote the script with Joe Conway, has cited the influence of filmmaker Terrence Malick, who is credited as a producer. Green was also influenced by low-budget regional films of the 1970s (like Macon County Line and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and by Charles Laughton's classic The Night of the Hunter. Filmmaker Terry Zwigoff, who enjoyed breakthrough success with his 1994 documentary Crumb, shifts gears as he examines the lives of two young women on the verge of leaving their adolescence behind in his first dramatic feature. Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) are two close friends who've just graduated from high school, and are trying to decide what to do with their lives. Enid is a dark-haired arch cynic who is tired of living at home with her ineffectual dad (Bob Balaban) and his annoyingly perky girlfriend Maxine (Teri Garr), while Rebecca is prettier and a bit cheerier, but no more certain about her future. While the two girls have vague plans of getting an apartment together, they seem content to while away their summer hanging out and indulging in their shared infatuation with Josh (Brad Renfro), a friend from school who works at a convenience store and doesn't seem to be especially attracted to either of them. Enid discovers that in order to get her diploma, she'll have to take an additional class over the summer, where she winds up studying art with Roberta (Illeana Douglas), who is determined to encourage Enid's creative impulses, whether Enid likes it or not. More significantly, Enid meets Seymour (Steve Buscemi), a geeky record collector more than twice her age, and while they would seem to have little in common (and Rebecca thinks he's a creep), Enid discovers a kindred spirit in fellow misfit Seymour, who shares her disgust with the world around them, and a relationship begins to develop between the two. Ghost World is based on the award-winning graphic novel by comic artist Daniel Clowes, who also wrote the film's screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Star and producer Tom Bastounes reportedly sold his family produce store in Chicago to finance this semi-autobiographical romantic comedy about lost love and lost opportunities. As he works at his family's produce store, George (Bastounes) is haunted by his choices of 20 years ago. The two things he most regrets are not pursuing a career in opera singing and not pursuing Gina (Monica Zaffarano), his old classmate who has gone on to fame and fortune as a diva. The film opens with George's wife asking for a divorce after George tries to sneak into the house after returning from an adulterous tryst. George's fortunes change when Gina visits Chicago for a five-day gig. It becomes immediately clear that love between the two still smolders, though Gina is involved with a straight-arrow senator. When Gina can't sing at a charity function, George steps in and wows everyone -- including himself -- with his sonorous voice, and he is given a glowing review in the paper. Suddenly, George's life is on track again, until some unforeseen complications hamper his forward movement. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

When Sylvia dies from her gunshot wounds, the squad worries that the grieving Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) will go off the deep end. Indeed, Sipowicz shows signs of complete withdrawal, save for his tender loving care of Theo (Austin Majors), the child Sylvia bore him. Back at the Cullinen trial, it is revealed that the assassin targeted the wrong person, and that the attempted hit was masterminded by a heretofore unsuspected third party. And John Irvin (Bill Brochtrup), whose insistence that the death of Dolores Mayo be avenged began the chain of events leading to the courtroom tragedy, feels personally responsible for the whole mess.
