Anthony Geary Movies
University of Utah alumnus Anthony Geary was in soap operas almost from his matriculation into professional acting. His first TV role was on the long-forgotten ABC daytime drama Bright Promise in 1969; he also made his film bow that year, in the equally obscure Blood Sabbath. Not quite dashing enough for leading-man roles, Geary settled early on for character roles, ranging from fey (he was mistaken for a homosexual by Archie Bunker on a 1971 All in the Family episode) to ferocious. When cast as Luke Spencer on General Hospital in 1978, Geary was at first going through his standard villainous paces, sexually assaulting the married Laura Baldwyn (Genie Francis). Audience response to Luke, however, was astonishingly positive, and soon the antiheroic Mr. Spencer was a good guy (albeit with shady underworld connections), eventually making daytime TV ratings history when he married Laura in November of 1981. Geary ended up winning a 1982 Emmy for his fascinating performance as Luke. He left General Hospital in 1984 to pursue other career vistas; he headlined his own nightclub act, the "Smut Queens," and also starred in theatrical productions (in his pre-Luke years, Geary performed with the touring company of Jesus Christ Superstar). His plans for film stardom dwindled to silly supporting parts in sillier films, notably Disorderlies (1988) and UHF (1989). Geary returned to General Hospital in 1990 -- not as Luke, but as Luke's cousin Bill Eckert (complete with Italian-Teutonic accent). A high-profile advertising executive who's struggling to land a lucrative promotion gets an important lesson from a most unlikely source in the feature directorial debut of prolific television actor Corbin Bernsen. Joel Goodman (Rick Hearst) is content with his high-paying job and his happy home life, but when a hard-working and high-ranking colleague literally works himself to death, the friendly competition between Joel and his co-worker Tom (Sean Kanan) turns as serious as a heart attack. In Joel's eyes, the only thing standing between him and the newly available corner office is the slow-going, bumper-to-bumper Los Angeles traffic that he is forced to contend with on a daily basis -- a problem easily resolved when Joel hires a homeless man (Anthony Geary) to join him in the daily commute so that Joel may have access to the faster moving carpool lanes. Though at first the pair seem to have little in common, conversation soon reveals that, despite outward appearances, Joel's new traveling companion knows a thing or two about getting ahead in business, and that in order to be successful in the office one must first find happiness in the home. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Do You Know the Muffin Man? was the first of a brace of TV movies about day-care abuse (see also Unspeakable Acts). Pam Dawber and John Shea play the parents of a preschool child who comes home one day with horrible stories about the staff of his day care center. The owners of the center are two highly respected social pillars, who automatically deny all charges and accuse the parents of fabricating the whole thing. Despite the looming spectres of public ridicule and financial ruin, Dawber and Shea hire lawyers and pursue the case. Once the story switches to the courtroom, the emphasis shifts from the adult litigants to the prosecution's difficulties in coaxing the children to testify without inducing further damage. Do You Know the Muffin Man? is handled with care and discretion, though dramatically it covers more legal and emotional ground than its two-hour length can hold. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

UHF is the film debut of comedy rock satirist Weird Al Yankovic, who also co-wrote the screenplay. George Newman (Yankovic) and his friend Bob (David Bowe from The Cable Guy) are fired from their jobs at Burger World. So George decides to take over Channel 62, a failing local TV station that his uncle Harvey (Stanley Brock) won in a poker game. George turns it around into an overnight success after letting the janitor, Stanley Spadowski (Michael Richards from Seinfeld), host a kid's show. George then fills the broadcast day with bizarre programming, bringing the ratings up and saving the station. Soon, rival station CEO R.J. Fletcher (Kevin McCarthy) of Channel 8 threatens to sabotage the successful station, and George must come up with a way to save it. Only loosely constructed around this storyline, UHF is mostly a series of TV, movie, and music parodies strung together and played for cheap laughs. When Claire (Linda Kozlowski) learns her grandmother has been bilked out of $50,000 by the crooked televangelists Ray (Tim Curry) and Darla Porter (Annie Potts), she recruits her redneck boyfriend Jesse (Bill Paxton) to help recover the money. They travel to the Tower of Bethlehem deep in the Arkansas woods to break into the studio and hold the hosts of the show hostage. This timely comedy came in the wake of scandals involving real-life televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker and Jimmy "I Have Sinned" Swaggert. A young Ohio man moves to Los Angeles in search of a career and a girlfriend in this romantic comedy, whose action centers on the '80s singles scene. Eddy (David Packer) heads to California after his cousin, Skip (Scott McGinnis), promises him a job in the ad biz, but Eddy ends up with the unenviable task of handing out flyers on the beach. Turning his focus from the professional to the romantic, Eddy joins a video dating service and endures a series of inaccurate match-ups that drive him to adopt wilder and wilder guises for his video ads. Along the way, he meets Peggy Kellogg (Bridget Fonda), an employee of the dating service, but she's always got her boyfriend on her arm. Frustrated over Peggy's inaccessibility and the dead-end job he's unfairly been stuck with, Eddy finally decides to take a gamble -- to be himself in the yuppie fantasia of L.A. The soundtrack to You Can't Hurry Love features singer Phil Collins' cover of the '60s song from which the film takes its name. Kristy McNichol, Charles Grodin, and Sally Kellerman all appear in cameo roles. Also on hand is Robert Vaughn as Dave Fairmont, the requisite evil land developer who will resort to any means necessary to keep news of the epidemic from spreading to the world.
