A would-be North Korean defector still reeling over the killing of his family by the communist government when he was just a child determines to destroy the Korean peninsula in a tense, politically minded action thriller directed by Kwak Kyung-taek and starring Jang Dong-gun, Lee Jung-jae, and Lee Mi-yeon. When a vessel sailing a few hundred kilometers off the northeast port of Jt Long in Taiwan is hijacked by pirates and the National Intelligence Service learns that a nuclear guidance kit has been stolen, they quickly dispatch naval lieutenant Kang, Se-jong (Lee Jung-jae) to find out who was responsible for the deed and to bring him to justice. The criminal mastermind in question is Sin (Jang Dong-gun), a man who harbors a deep-rooted hatred for the Korean government due to a tragic event that took place in his childhood. As a young boy, Sin's family had tried to defect to South Korea. When they were turned away by a government who feared complicating their relationship with China, however, Sin watched as his parents were brutally executed and his only sister, Choi, Myung-ju (Lee Mi-yeon), was taken away. Upon learning that Sin currently resides in Russia, Lieutenant Kang travels to the Eastern European republic as the tragedy of Sin's past slowly comes into focus for the sympathetic military man. His mission to apprehend Sin is clear, though, and despite his personal feelings Lieutenant Kang remains determined to get his man by any means necessary. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The sophomore effort of writer-director Kim Jee-woon, who had success on the festival circuit with his 1998 black comedy The Quiet Family, Banchik Wang opens by introducing us to harried office grunt Im Dae-ho (Song Kang-ho). Nagged by his father, hassled by his boss, and secretly in love with a female colleague, Dae-ho finds solace in wrestling and the so-called "foul kings," or take-no-prisoners championship wrestlers who will do anything to win a match. He decides to try his own hand at the sport and is eventually -- if reluctantly -- taken on as the pupil of a weathered coach (Jang Hang-seon). Training by the coach's daughter (Jang Jin-yeong) allows Dae-ho to develop self-confidence, and after becoming the accidental victor of his first fight, he prepares for a tag match against reigning champion Yubiho (Kim Su-ro), who wants an easy win to further his career in Japan. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Eun-seok (Lee Jeong-jae), a struggling young filmmaker, is interviewing actors for an upcoming project when he is introduced to Yeong-heui (Shim Eun-ha), a hairdresser who tagged along with a close friend auditioning for a role. Eun-seok is struck by Yeong-heui's beauty, and he interviews her for a role, though she's quite shy and doesn't seem comfortable in front of a camera. Before Eun-seok can get his project off the ground, Yeong-heui disappears, and he discovers that the woman used an assumed name for her impromptu audition. Twelve months later, Eun-seok is working in France as part of the camera crew of another director's film, and he discovers Yeong-heui is living there, working as a dance instructor. He soon learns the truth about her recent past, while she is told of his failed romance in Paris. Intyebyu was shown in its native South Korea in a version running 107 minutes, while the print prepared for international distribution was expanded to 124 minutes. The original South Korean edition also bore the imprint of Dogma 95, a movement championing aesthetic asceticism in filmmaking that was founded in part by director Lars von Trier, though the longer cut did not carry the Dogma logo. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Set in 1963, Nae Maeumeui Pungguem/The Harmonium in My Memory tells the tale of Kang Su-ha (Lee Byung-heon), a 21-year-old novice schoolteacher who lands a job in the very small town of Sanri, mostly populated by illiterate families stuck in poverty, and with little interest in education. Add to this the fact that Kang is very nervous and clumsy in the extreme, and it's no wonder he has a hard time keeping his class in order. Kang makes the acquaintance of Yang Eun-hee (Lee Mi-yeon), a lovely young woman who is also on the school's faculty, and, though it takes a while, Kang eventually works up the courage to actually talk to her. However, Kang has an unexpected obstacle in this potential romance. One of his students, 17-year-old Yun Hong-yeon (Jeon Do-yeon), has a furious crush on Kang, and she isn't about to make it easy for him to him to pursue the woman of his dreams. The film was cited in the press for the fine performances of the three leads and the accurate recreation of Korea on the cusp of modernization. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Every three years, the gloomy halls of a highly regimented all-girl Korean school are haunted by the spirit of a student who died as a result of her teachers' cruel forms of discipline. Though outwardly a Gothic, sometimes gruesome horror tale, the story is actually a critique of Korea's militaristic approach to education. At the school, it is not uncommon for errant students to be slapped or hit hard upon the head. The ghost died a decade before in a freak accident and since then her restless spirit reemerges at the same time and interval to get revenge by taking over the body of a new student and using her to cause all kinds of trouble for the instructors. One of those educators was a former student and a best friend of the deceased girl. The ghost's reign of terror is threatened by the presence of a shaman's daughter, who has at her disposal the means to send the ghost away forever. Yeogo Goedan was screened at the 1998 Vancouver Film Festival. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Rejecting current trends in mainstream genres and the conventions of commercial cinema, Choyonnghan-Kajok, an experimental black comedy, follows an eccentric story line with some surprise attacks on the audience. Comedy and horror elements are used intermittently to create a thriller in a family setting. The events are seen through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Mi-na, daughter of the Kang family, who decide to run Mt. Lodge in the suburbs of Seoul after the father is dismissed from his company. Contrary to expectations, there are no guests lining up at the door, and the youngest daughter is upset by a strange noise she hears at night. After two weeks, the first guest appears, but he is found dead the next day. The family buries him in a hurry to avoid bad publicity. Then a couple arrives and commits double suicide and they have to bury them, too. By the time they get used to digging, it's announced a road construction will pass beside their property. The set of the film, Mt. Lodge, was created in real size by a set specialist and architect large enough for camera equipment to move around. Although the subtexts are not labored, the sanctity of family solidarity and the capacity for sudden violence in the very conservative Korean society are some of the themes the audience is left to reflect. Choyonnghan-Kajok was screened as part of the International Forum of Young Cinema at the 49th International Berlin Film Festival, 1999. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, All Movie Guide
