Marwan (Arnold Vosloo) has escaped, and CTU discovers that he was working for McLennan-Forster, a big defense contractor, under an assumed name. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) heads to their offices to find out more. When Paul (James Frain) finds out about the connection, he offers to go with Jack, because he installed the defense firm's security software. At the firm, McLennan (Bill Smitrovich) and his underlings Conlon (Tomas Arana) and Reiss (Albie Selznick) pretend to cooperate, while they're secretly working furiously to destroy their incriminating files before Jack and Paul can uncover them. Because of Paul's expertise at retrieving their data, the crooked businessmen decide to take more drastic measures before it's too late. While the company charges an electromagnetic pulse to destroy all their hardware, Jack investigates the electrical disturbance, leaving Paul to print out a critical encoded file before the device goes off. At CTU, Driscoll (Alberta Watson), shaken by her daughter's suicide, is forced to step down from command. Heller (William Devane) appoints Tony (Carlos Bernard) interim director of CTU Los Angeles, but he also asks Division to send in a replacement as soon as possible. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) tells Audrey (Kim Raver) that Paul (James Frain) was shot while saving his life. Paul is flown in to CTU, where surgeons try to save him. Audrey seems to be rediscovering her feelings for her husband. Heller (William Devane) tells Keeler (Geoff Pierson) that Marwan (Arnold Vosloo) is probably going to strike again, and Keeler suggests they make provisions for civil unrest. CTU finds the name of Joseph Fayed (Adam Alexi-Malle) on the document retrieved from McLennan-Forster, and he's on their terrorist watch list. Jack comes up with a plot to have Dina Araz (Shohreh Aghdashloo) approach Fayed for help (even though she insists she's never met the man, because Marwan has been careful to keep his cells separated), claiming that she took Jack hostage during a firefight. Dina agrees to help when Jack promises to put her and Behrooz (Jonathan Ahdout) in witness protection together. Jack and Dina go to Fayed's home, and Dina convinces him to contact Marwan. Fayed sends his men to pick them up, but CTU's attempts to track them go awry. Anderson (Ned Vaughn), with help from a mysterious woman (Dagmara Dominczyk), abducts a pilot, and then uses him to get into a military base. Back at CTU, Sara's been ousted and Edgar (Louis Lombardi) seems despondent over his mother's death. Tony (Carlos Bernard) tells Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) that Driscoll canned Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) over her loyalty to Jack, and Michelle decides to call her back to work. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Paul (James Frain) comes out of surgery paralyzed from the waist down. Audrey (Kim Raver) goes to his bedside and tells him how brave he's been. Tony (Carlos Bernard) begins to suspect that Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) has more than a professional relationship with Bill Buchanan (James Morrison). Keeler (Geoff Pierson), still flying on Air Force One, decides to land in Los Angeles in order to address the nation about the day's horrific events. He asks his son Kevin (Chris Olivero) for advice on what to say. Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) has been pretty hard on Edgar (Louis Lombardi), but when she catches him making a critical mistake, she decides to cover for him. It turns out that the ever-resourceful Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) was able to short out some phone lines while he was being held captive by Marwan (Arnold Vosloo), and this enables CTU to locate the hideout. Unfortunately, Marwan notices the shorted phone lines before the assault team arrives, and manages to cover his tracks as he makes his escape. After the assault, Jack interrogates a dying terrorist, but only learns that the next attack will take place "within the hour." Jack does find a forged document linking Marwan to Anderson (Ned Vaughn). An FBI agent arrives at Anderson's apartment, only to be killed by Nicole (Dagmara Dominczyk), the woman who helped Anderson abduct the pilot. Nicole then poses as the agent as Jack and Agent Hart (Dean Cudworth) arrive to search the premises. She's searching for a hidden external hard drive containing critical evidence, and gets the CTU agents to help her look. CTU eventually finds out the shocking truth about Marwan's next target. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper returns to his rightful place behind the camera to weave this gruesome tale concerning an abandoned small-town funeral home with a dark and deadly secret. Local legend has it that the Fowler Funeral Home in Santa Loraina, CA, is plagued with death of the most unnatural kind. Rumored to have been purchased to launch a ranching business by Zeb Fowler, the land was subsequently converted into a funeral home when the cattle all began dying of a mysterious and undiagnosed ailment. When Zeb and his wife gave birth to a hideously disfigured boy named Bobby soon thereafter, the story took a strange turn as the pair attempted to shelter their son by covering his face with a burial shroud. After young Bobby disappeared at the age of eight and his parents were found brutally murdered a decade later, rumors began to swirl around the community that Bobby may still be alive. Now single mother Leslie Doyle (Denise Crosby) has moved into the long-abandoned and hideously decrepit home with aspirations of restoring it and taking on the role of town mortician for the town of Santa Loraina, and, along with her children, Jonathon (Dan Byrd) and Jamie (Stephanie Patton), she is about to discover that some legends never die. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) calls into CTU, and lets Driscoll (Alberta Watson) know that Ronnie's been killed, and that he's currently trailing Kalil (Anil Kumar), the terrorist who kidnapped Andrew (Lukas Haas). Driscoll asks Jack for his location, because she wants to pick Kalil up immediately, but Jack thinks the terrorist will lead him right to the compound where Heller (William Devane) and Audrey (Kim Raver) are being held. He refuses to tell Driscoll where he is, so she decides that capturing Jack is now CTU's top priority. Office politics are charged at the CTU office, and things only get more paranoid when Driscoll brings in Marianne Taylor (Aisha Tyler), over the objections of her second-in-command, Curtis (Roger R. Cross). Curtis has had (intimate) dealings with the ambitious Marianne in the past, and doesn't trust her. She immediately begins questioning Edgar (Louis Lombardi) about the day's events. Jack convinces Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) to surreptitiously help him track Andrew's kidnapper. While Jack follows the suspicious terrorist, Chloe works on stealing satellite imagery of the area so he can follow from a safer distance. As Jack watches, Kalil pulls off the road and meets up with two thugs, who proceed to beat the helpless Andrew, demanding to know who he told about what he found on the Internet. Kalil drives off, leaving Andrew to be killed. Jack wants to follow him, but decides he can't leave Andrew to die. After saving Andrew's life, he rushes to catch up with Kalil. Kalil goes into a convenience store, giving Chloe a few more minutes to get Jack the satellite coverage, but she needs more time, and Jack is forced to take desperate action. Meanwhile, at the Araz home, Behrooz (Jonathan Ahdout) is horrified to learn that Dina (Shohreh Aghdashloo) has invited Debbie (Leighton Meester) over "to talk." ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Curtis (Roger R. Cross) and Driscoll (Alberta Watson) could both be in trouble over the whole Marianne (Aisha Tyler) debacle. They agree to cover each other with Division. Powell is dead, Marianne is unconscious, and the nuclear power plant at San Gabriel Island is on the verge of going critical. Edgar (Louis Lombardi) is concerned about his wheelchair-bound mother, who lives nearby and has no way to evacuate. While Behrooz (Jonathan Ahdout) goes to the local hospital, where his uncle, Naseem (Michael Benyaer), is a doctor, to try to get his mother some pain medication, Edgar is able to locate a cell phone that Powell called before he was shot, and that's how Jack and Tony are able to find Dina (Shohreh Aghdashloo), who is hiding out in a hotel room. Knowing Dina's weak spot, Jack tells Dina that Behrooz will get a full pardon and government protection if she leads them to the override device. She agrees, and calls Behrooz at the hospital to tell him to wait there for her and the CTU team. Season four of the wildly successful "real-time" adventure series 24 begins some 18 months at the end of season three. John Keeler (Geoff Pierson) has succeeded David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) as president of the United States, and the new secretary of defense is James Heller (William Devane) -- who is also the new boss of crack CTU agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). One of Heller's first moves is to reunite Jack with his old nemesis Erin Driscoll (Alberta Watson), now the head of the CTU. Unbeknownst to most of the principal characters, Jack is in love with Heller's daughter (and policy assistant), Audrey Raines (Kim Raver), this despite the fact that Audrey is still legally married to estranged husband, Paul (James Frain). Outside of Jack Bauer and President Keeler, the only series character from season three to return as a regular in season four is CTU tech analyst Chloe O'Brien (Mary Lynn Rajskub); the rest of the cast is virtually brand-new. The "day" that comprises the fourth season begins, typically, with a nail-biting crisis, when James Heller and his daughter Audrey are captured by a terrorist group headed by Habib Marwan (Arnold Vosloo), who has already set a fiendish master plan in motion with a train bombing in the U.S. It soon develops that the abduction of Heller and Audrey is but a subterfuge to allow an enemy stealth bomber to blow up Air Force One and eliminate the president -- and ultimately to gain control of a nuclear warhead that will destroy a major U.S. city. Making matters worse, there is a turncoat in the ranks of the CTU -- and without giving the game away, it can be noted that CTU agent Sarah Gavin (Lana Parrilla) tumbles to the mole's identity before Jack Bauer does. As the tension mounts, Paul Raines is seriously wounded saving Jack during a covert mission, which "ices" Jack's relationship with Audrey; a shattering personal tragedy forces Erin Driscoll to resign from her post in mid-season; there is dissension in the terrorist ranks during a concerted effort to trigger nuclear meltdowns in six different cities; the seldom-used 25th Amendment is invoked to change presidents in midstream; and an old enemy of Jack's from the series' first two seasons appears virtually out of nowhere to make a terrible situation far worse than could ever be imagined. Clearly, the fourth season of 24 drew inspiration from the headlines of the day, notably the controversial treatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib. The series also was attacked by certain special-interest groups for making several of the villains Arabs, or of Arab descent. And of course, there were those who carped that the series' notion of "real time" (each episode consisted of a single uninterrupted hour in the same day) resulted in some rather ludicrous lapses of logic. But 24 was as big a hit in the ratings throughout its fourth season as it had been all along. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Even though it got them a possible location for Marwan (Arnold Vosloo), Audrey (Kim Raver) warns Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) about the consequences of disobeying Logan (Gregory Itzin) by torturing Prado for information. "No one understands the consequences better than me," Jack tells her. Buchanan (James Morrison) tells Mike (Jude Ciccolella) what happened, and suggests he withhold the information from Logan, but Mike refuses. Logan is livid (and whiny) when he hears that a CTU agent undermined his authority, so he orders the Secret Service to arrest Jack. Mike logically suggests that he wait until after Marwan is apprehended, but Logan is adamant that the arrest be made immediately, if not sooner. So while Jack and Curtis (Roger R. Cross) close in on Marwan, who is recording a message to be played after the nuclear attack, the Secret Service arrive and compromise the mission. Meanwhile, Sabir (Kris Iyer), one of Marwan's techs, gets a call from his worried girlfriend, Nabilla (Lina Patel), who found a suspicious bookmark on his computer, and suspects his involvement with the recent terrorist activities. Another Marwan operative, Morrison (Keith Szarabajka), overhears Sabir's conversation and alerts Marwan, while Nabilla contacts the authorities. Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) determines that the schematic Nabilla has found is of a microchip used to control the trigger on a nuclear warhead. With CTU short on time and personnel, Buchanan (James Morrison) sends Chloe into the field to look at the computer. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) has captured Alvers (Lothaire Bluteau), but despite Gael's (Jesse Borrego) best efforts, the virus has been dispersed in the Chandler Plaza Hotel. Michelle calls Tony (Carlos Bernard) to tell him the bad news, and he's horrified to realize that she's calling from inside the hotel. He tells her to leave immediately, but she refuses, understanding that she might already be infected. Chappelle (Paul Schulze) tells Michelle that she's to shoot to kill if anyone tries to leave. She gets the hotel security chief, Phillips (Doug Savant), to help her keep everyone inside and maintain order. Alvers, knowing he's going to die, tells Michelle he'll tell her everything he knows if she promises to kill him once he starts showing symptoms of the virus. There are 11 other vials in play, and the virus has been modified, as they soon discover when Gael starts showing symptoms within an hour of being exposed. One hotel employee, Margolis (J.D. Cullum), overhears Michelle and Gael talking, and tries to escape. When that fails, he sets off the fire alarm, bringing a crowd of hotel guests down to the lobby. The guests demand to know why they can't leave, and Michelle tells them there's a toxic substance in the air outside the building. This story falls apart when a few people in the lobby start to get nosebleeds, and a full-scale panic breaks out. Meanwhile, Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) reluctantly lies to the police to back up Sherry's (Penny Johnson Jerald) alibi. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) and Chase (James Badge Dale) allow Amador (Greg Ellis) to escape, hoping he'll lead him to the mastermind behind the virus plot, but their plans backfire, and Jack gets a call from an old friend. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) has been given his next command by Saunders (Paul Blackthorne). Saunders wants Ryan Chappelle (Paul Schulze) dead. Palmer tells Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) the bad news, and then it's a race against the clock to find Saunders before the deadline for delivering Chappelle's body, at 7:00 a.m. Jack tells Tony (Carlos Bernard), who realizes that they need to change Chappelle's security clearance. Jack then takes Chappelle aside and tells him the shocking news. Since Chappelle has no past connection to Saunders, Jack realizes that the demand must be due to Chappelle's work on the money trail. He has Chappelle transfer those files to Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub), who finds an encrypted bank account. Chappelle tries to leave CTU, and when Jack stops him, he claims he was just going outside to smoke. As Chloe cracks the code and finds a Los Angeles address for Saunders, Jack takes Chappelle to the trainyard where his body is to be delivered, just in case the CTU team, led by Chase (James Badge Dale) and Tom Baker (Daniel Dae Kim), doesn't get to Saunders in time. Back at the Chandler Plaza Hotel, Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) has an emotional phone conversation with Tony. She then offers the suicide capsules to the infected guests. One guest, Kathy McCartney (Brigid Brannagh), comes forward to tell Michelle that the man she spent last night with is no longer in the hotel, and Michelle realizes that he must have left after the virus was released, but before CTU arrived to seal off the building. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

He wants to interrogate Nina about Alvers (Lothaire Bluteau), but Chappelle (Paul Schulze) insists that Jack himself be interrogated about his heroin problem. So Tony (Carlos Bernard) handles Nina, while Rae Plachecki (Jenette Goldstein) from the inspector general's office questions Jack about why he started using heroin long before he got in with the Salazars. Chappelle proposes fudging the timeline so his drug use looks more legitimate, and letting Jack get back to work, but Jack refuses to lie about his actions, or even justify them. "This office demands results," Jack tells them. "That's what I provide." Darren Richards (Butch Klein), an interrogation (torture?) specialist, is brought in to work on Nina, with disastrous results. Jack seems to be the only one at CTU who understands just how dangerous Nina is. Chase (James Badge Dale) learns that Kim found out that the baby is his. He asks Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) how she took the news. "Gee, I don't know, Chase," Chloe tells him. "I think she's kinda pissed." Meanwhile, Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) returns to Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) headquarters, and tells him that she only spoke to Julia (Gina Torres) on the phone. But Julia calls Wayne (D.B. Jack has a different idea. He asks Jane Saunders (Alexandra Lydon) to try to convince her father to call off the attack. When her impassioned pleas fail to reach him, Jack brings Saunders to the Chandler Plaza Hotel, and threatens to send Jane inside, so she'll be infected with the virus. When Saunders sees that Jack's serious, he relents. He's taken back to CTU, where he helps them begin tracking down the vials, using GPS locator chips he's planted on each one. All the vials are accounted for except for the one in Los Angeles. When CTU finally gets a location on that vial, they realize that the terrorist who has it is on the subway. Palmer invites Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) to meet with him to discuss her blackmail scheme. In exchange for turning over the evidence of her involvement in Milliken's murder, she demands a prominent role in the president's administration...and in his life. Palmer is really just trying to keep Sherry busy while Wayne (D.B. Woodside) and Foxton (Mark Rolston) break into her house to look for the incriminating prescription bottle. Employing split screens and kinetic pacing, the real-time action thriller-drama 24 became a fast cult hit when it premiered on FOX in late 2001. Each one-hour episode covers an hour in a single day that unfolds over the course of a season. Kiefer Sutherland stars as über-hero Jack Bauer, a daring and seemingly indestructible agent for the fictitious U.S.-intelligence body the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). Throughout the series, Bauer has stopped an assassination attempt, thwarted a nuclear attack, been widowed, decapitated a witness, died, and become addicted to narcotics while undercover with a drug cartel. Among the other characters are President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), who was candidate Palmer throughout the first season, later had the Presidency swiped from under him, and was the victim of a bio-attack at the end of the second season; Kim Bauer (Elisha Cuthbert), Jack's trouble-prone, damsel-in-distress daughter; and Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard), a fellow-CIA agent with whom Jack has both butted heads and allied. Noted for its unflinching ability to kill off major players for the sake of the show, an assortment of other characters have come and gone throughout the show's history. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi
