In this short film by Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu, a man named Liviu wakes up one morning from a disturbing dream that he cannot remember. All he knows of his nighttime vision is that it has changed his view of the world, and has perhaps coincided with the birth of his child. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
Romanian director Lucian Pintilie helmed this French-Romanian drama that opens on the outskirts of Budapest. Dimitri, aka Mitou (Costel Cascaval) raises pigs for a living, but he's due to begin two years of military service the next day. Clad in hot pants, waitress Elena, aka Norica (Dorina Chiriac) matches Mitou in knocking back shots of vodka. Although Norica is engaged to marry Gili, owner of the rundown roadside sausage stand where she works, she accompanies Mitou to his spare apartment. Resentful of his family and obsessed with Norica, the stubborn, headstrong Mitou is uncompromising and ready for a final showdown with authority figures. Hampered by a low-budget, director Mircea Veroiu has still created an effective black-and-white film on the resistance movement in Romania in 1934. The story focuses on the exploits of Sarka (Gheorghe Visu), a circus performer, and Horatio (Claudio Bleont), a student, as they join forces to fight rising fascism in Romania -- but many viewers would read parallels to the situation in the country in the early 1980s (several years before the bloody dictator Ceausescu was ousted from his military rule and executed). Sarka and Horatio are shown risking life and limb; at one point, they hide submerged in a water tower to escape detection by Nazi soldiers, and at another point, Sarka is sprung from jail by one of his courageous circus friends. Eventually, Sarka and Horatio become separated, and although it might be easier for at least one to survive on his own, the odds against both surviving are very low indeed. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

When a carpenter is unjustly accused of stealing a radio and some belongings on a beach, rather than justice prevailing as it should, a neurotic surgeon who saw the actual theft decides to testify against the carpenter and get him thrown in jail -- he just does not like the man. The worst happens, and the carpenter serves his time behind bars, yet even when he gets out of prison, the surgeon unrelentingly goes after him. Viewers who have paid bad carpenters might sympathize, but otherwise, the surgeon's behavior over a minor theft and an innocent man makes one wonder how he passed certification to cut people open. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

He also discovers that her ex-partner is working in a circus as a death-defying motorcyclist - a job that has a certain edge over work in the factory.
