Herman (Fred Gwynne) decides to buy a car for niece Marilyn (Pat Priest). This brings him to the used-car establishment run by Fair Deal Dan (played by impressionist Frank Gorshin), who not unexpectedly belies his name by selling Herman a lemon. Even worse, the car is stolen, and Herman finds himself a fugitive from justice. Featured in the cast is Johnny Silver as a character named Blinky, a full three years before the diminutive Silver donned the costume of "Dr. Blinkey" on Sid and Marty Krofft's H.R. A well-dressed older man drives a car along the winding mountain road adjacent to the Grand Canyon. Another man lies in wait for him where the road ends. They fight, and the car and one of the men plunge into the mile-deep gorge. Thus begins a series of four killings that fall into the lap of newly hired Mojave County deputy Les Martin (Cornel Wilde) and his boss, Sheriff Edwards (Edgar Buchanan). Les is an experienced homicide detective trying to redeem himself and his career after a series of personal tragedies and professional disasters, unsteady in his confidence and uncertain of his ability -- the only people he's especially close to are the sheriff who hired him and Scotty (Mickey Shaughnessy), the big-hearted keeper of the local tavern. And complicating his investigation of the murder case at hand is his constant crossing of paths with the beautiful, wealthy Janice Kendon (Victoria Shaw), who seems to have a knack for turning up around every corner of this case. Although the actual battle of the Coral Sea does not begin this standard wartime drama, there is plenty of action and suspense as the preparation stage of the battle is carried out. A submarine captained by Jeff Conway (Cliff Robertson) successfully scouts the location of enemy installations, ships, and subs and then starts to head back to friendly waters. Before chugging very far in that direction, the submarine is spotted and captured by the Japanese. The crew members are taken prisoner by an even-handed Commander Mori (Teru Shimada) and held on the Japanese forces' island base. While chaffing under a ticking clock as the day of the final confrontation draws near, an island woman is secretly enlisted to help smuggle out three of the prisoners. If they can make it off the island to their own base, then the all-important information on the Japanese positions will tip the scales in favor of the U.S. Navy. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The spectacle of the big top and flying trapeze artists provide a dramatic setting for this standard tale about an aerialist returned from Army service, looking to pick up where he left off. Rick Rias (Michael Callan) receives a double shock when he comes back from the Army: the woman he loved before he was called to duty is now married to someone else, and his father will not recommend him for an aerial act because he says he is not ready yet. Rick's broken heart starts to mend when he takes an interest in young Suzanne (Evy Norlund), the newest member of the "Flying Fontaines." The only drawback is that her heart is set on Bill (Rian Garrick) another trapeze artist. Rick's luck continues to deteriorate as one misfortune follows another. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
