Henri Garat Movies

Born Henri Garascu, French actor Henri Garat was a popular leading man in light romances during the 1930s. After beginning his career working in music halls, he later primarily appeared in French adaptations of Teutonic operettas and was frequently cast opposite Lilian Harvey. In 1933, Garat appeared with Janet Gaynor in the U.S. feature Adorable. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This French musical comedy was released in English-speaking countries as My Foster Sister. It's the old chestnut about a starry-eyed young miss who sets her cap for a handsome, and much-older, movie star. To get closer to her idol Henry Garat, impulsive Meg Lemonnier poses as Garat's foster sister. The servants give her the boot, but eventually Meg realizes her goal when she meets Garat face to face. For once, the songs and comedy are on equal footing: in fact, the laughs linger in the memory far longer than the tunes. Outside of Garet and Lemonnier, the real star of the proceedings is gifted farceur Lucien Baroux as Garat's personal secretary (he even sings better than his boss!) ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Danielle Darrieux stars as a scatter-brained college coed who miraculously becomes a lawyer. Her father would prefer that she give up the law in favor of marriage, but our heroine intends to out-Portia Portia in the courtroom. She gets her big chance when she's hired to defend Henry Garat, a charming but unregenerate crook. While trying to reform her client, Darrieux falls head over heels in love with him. The story ends when Garat reveals his true identity, which takes everyone's breath away. Utterly forgettable, Avocate D'Amour (Counsel for Romance) is also infinitely charming, with both stars at their peak. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A choice early example of esoterica from the great Max Ophuls, On a Vole un Homme (Man Stolen) is a bit more lighthearted than later Ophuls efforts. Typical of the director's best works, the film's strongest character is the heroine, a young adventuress named Annette (Lily Damita). Hired by the business rivals of young banker Jean de Fayate (Henry Gayat), Annette lures the youthful millionaire into a kidnap trap. Eventually falling in love with her victim, Annette helps Jean to escape -- and to get even with those who've been plotting against him. Gorgeously photographed on the French Riviera and other such eye-catching locations, On a Vole un Homme was the first of a brace of films produced in France by Erich Pommer on behalf of Hollywood's Fox Films. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
