After Patsy (Joanna Lumley) manages to incinerate the Monsoons' kitchen, she and Edina (Jennifer Saunders) take to hanging out in the living room. The only problem is that Saffy (Julia Sawalha) has a rare, though clandestine, date planned for that very room. As Eddy and her monstrous friend torture Saffy by staying put, Gran (June Whitfield) accidentally locks the three women in the living room on her way to the chemist's, leaving Saffy inconsolable and Pats and Eddy bored. Talk turns to sex as Edina tortures Saffy with questions, resorting to a Cosmopolitan sex quiz to elicit information from the girl. Saffy and Patsy fight bitterly, the gaunt fashion plate jealous of the privileges her young rival has enjoyed. In flashbacks, we see the births of all three characters -- including an over-the-top sequence in which Patsy's pretentious mother compares her daughter to a tumor and gives birth to the accompaniment of bad Beat poetry. Eventually, Gran returns home, freeing the trio from the displeasure of each other's forcible company. Originally broadcast on BBC 1 on March 10, 1994, Absolutely Fabulous: Birth marked series two, episode six of this popular Brit-com. Mike Nichols lends some comic structure to Carrie Fisher's best-selling confessional novel concerning a woman's struggles with drug addiction and mother-daughter rivalry (subjects Fisher admits to understanding all too well). Meryl Streep, in her most full-blown comic performance up to that point, plays Suzanne Vale, a popular movie actress well on her way to a Hollywood crack-up. Suzanne suffers from blackouts and memory lapses, and awakens in the beds of men she doesn't remember; she is a barely-functioning wreck on the set of her latest movie. When a coke dealer who delivers stops by her dressing room between takes, she swiftly finds herself being rushed to the hospital, suffering the effects of a narcotics bender. While in detox, Suzanne attempts to piece her life and career back together, but her confidence is shattered when her mother arrives at the rehab clinic -- Doris Mann, a famed film icon from the 1950s and 1960s (Shirley MacLaine). Doris is soon soaking up the adulation and applause of Suzanne's fellow recovering drug addicts. It's been a while since Murphy (Candice Bergen) has wound her biological clock, but the ticking begins anew when her pregnant friend Lisa (Jenny O'Hara) pays a visit. Now determined to be "with child" herself, Murphy doesn't want to waste time with such details as love and marriage, so she tries to coerce her coworker Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto) into donating his sperm for an in-vitro procedure. This idea fizzles, leaving Murphy no other choice but to try to obtain Frank's sperm through the time-honored direct method!
