One of the most heavily promoted TV movies of the 1997-98 season, The Lake is a complex sci-fi/fantasy yarn with echoes of such past genre classics as Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Stepford Wives. Former Baywatch babe Yasmine Bleeth heads the huge cast as Jackie Ivers, a professional nurse who returns to her small California home town to care for her dying father. Upon her arrival, Jackie quickly ascertains that something is not quite right about the community and the people with whom she grew up. Put bluntly, every person in town is behaving in the exact opposite manner of what might normally be expected--and this bizarre mass character conversion has spread to Jackie's own family. Ultimately, the solution to the mystery manifested a polluted lake and an alternate earth, though the conclusion of the story provides a twist calculated to confound those who think they have everything figured out by the film's midway point. The best moments go to Marion Ross in what amounts to a dual role, and to Haley Joel Osment of Sixth Sense fame. The Lake made its NBC network bow on February 1, 1998. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An unusually well photographed and acted TV movie, Dark Angel is set in New Orleans, home turf of enigmatic Cajun detective Walter D'Arcangelo (Eric Roberts). The detective's present assignment finds him going undercover in the seamier districts of the Big Easy in order to trap a serial killer who preys exclusively on adulterous wives. In time-honored movie tradition, the elusive killer sends out cryptic clues to the relentless D'Arcangelo, who throughout his investigation is wrestling with some rather persistent demons of his own. Things come to a head when D'Arcangelo himself is suspected of being the very murderer he seeks! Dark Angel made its initial Fox network appearance on September 10, 1996. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Three disparate Texas sisters reunite to celebrate the wedding of the youngest and end-up having a thrilling adventure racing across the prairie with a fortune in stolen loot. The sisters, Francis, Mary Katherine, and the irrepressible spitfire CJ Crowley, whom the other two had to bail out of jail, were abandoned by their father in 1974 (this situation is presented via black and white flashback in the prologue and at various points throughout the story). No sooner is CJ free than she returns to the strip joint where she works. The owner is an ex-Texas Ranger, Wood Grimes. It was he who had their father sent to prison. CJ isn't there long, before Grimes fires her for sassing back. To get even, the sisters swipe a key and steal the loot that Grimes, their father, and another stole many years before. It was the murder of the third crook that got their father, Travis, sent to prison, but the girls think Grimes is the real killer. As the women flee with the booty, they have time to rehash their pasts and discuss their feelings about their father. At one point they encounter Beau, a handsome, overly-polite cowboy with whom Francis has a romantic fling. The story begins and ends at the famous"Cadillac Ranch" a combination burial ground and art gallery devoted to the luxurious old cars. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
