The man and his wife in this anecdotal French seriocomedy are Papon and Janette, played by Harry Baur and Suzy Vernon. Bored with her marriage to civil-servant Papon, Janette wanders off to have a brief fling with her casual lover. Upon her return, she finds out that her husband has become quite wealthy. Now he is the desirable one, and she is left out in the cold. The considerable age gap between Harry Baur and Suzy Vernon makes the basic situation in A Man and His Wife all the more amusing -- and poignant. Heavily reliant upon its witty dialogue, the film lost a great deal of its pungency when translated into English. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Les Petits translates colloquially as "Youngsters," a reference to pre-teen protagonists E. Roncier and C. Borrelli. Placed in a boarding school by his insensitive father, young Roncier forms a strong bond with female schoolmate Borelli. The kids' innocent relationship is unfortunately misinterpreted by a dirty-minded school supervisor. Returned to his father in disgrace, Roncier runs away, hoping to be reunited with Borelli, the only person in the world who truly cares for him. Finally, dad comes to his senses, blesses his son's platonic friendship, and promises to be a better father from here on in -- but only after agonizing over the possibility that the boy has accidentally drowned. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The great Harry Baur plays the title character in Cette Vielle Canaille -- which translates as "That Old Bum"! But he's no bum at the beginning of the picture: In fact, he's a retired doctor/chemist who spends his spare time conducting medical experiments on small lab animals. Looking for new specimens, Baur visits a circus, where he falls hopelessly in love with vain performer Alice Field. Inevitably, she leaves him in favor of a younger, handsomer man, whereupon Baur goes into an emotional tailspin. In the incredibly tense finale, Field must undergo a delicate operation -- which only Baur can perform! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Adapted from various stories by Jules Renard, Poil de Carotte (The Red Head) is the poetically related tale of a delicate domestic situation. Robert Lynen plays the young son of Catherine Fourtenay. Fourtenay's husband Harry Baur knows that Lynen is not his son, but remains married for appearances' sake. Baur remains aloof and distant until he discovers the cruelties heaped upon Lynen by his resentful mother. Foster father and son develop a respect and friendship for one another that finally deepens into love. A remake of a 1925 film of the same name (also directed by Julien Duvivier), Poil de Carotte which made a star out of its juvenile lead Robert Lynen, whose genuine red head needed no touching up by the makeup men; sadly, Lynen was killed while fighting with the Resistance during World War II. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Galeries Levy et Cie (The Levy Department Stores) was a sequel to the popular ethnic comedy Levy and Company. Leon Bellieres and Charles Lamy repeat their roles as the Levy Brothers, Solomon and Moses. Now in charge of a department-store chain, the Levys never let their success get in the way of their constant kvetching. Hoping to increase their wealth by marrying off their niece to a continental charmer, the brothers allow the girl to chart her own romantic course when her would-be husband turns out to be a fraud. As was the case with the earlier film, Galeries Levy et Cie contained a great deal of Jewish-stereotype humor which might seem offensive today. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
