This fine period musical dramatizes a subject both unique and distinguished: the movement of jazz fans (known as "Stilyagi") who flaunted their open-mindedness and fearlessly mocked Communist repression in 1955 Moscow. The central premise (which channels Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins' West Side Story) deals with a star-crossed romance between two lovers on opposite sides of the said fence: Mels (Anton Shagin) is a pro-communist Komsomol activist, Polly (Oksana Akinshina) is a sexy, uninhibited, free-spirited member of the Stilyagi; they fall instantly in love despite vast differences, and Polly turns her new paramour on to the many pleasures of the West, including jazz music. Significantly, although the real-life members of the Stilyagi experienced sad fates (such as imprisonment), this cinematic treatment of them exudes a bright and upbeat sensibility, marked by glossy musical numbers that are scattered throughout. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Forbidden love brings both happiness and tension to two people in this domestic drama. Ilya (Mikhail Porechenkov) and Nina (Anna Mikhalkova) are two people edging into middle age who have made successful careers for themselves in "the New Russia" -- Ilya runs a profitable business in Moscow, while Nina edits a magazine based in St. Petersburg. Ilya and Nina are also married, but not to each other -- while they've been having an affair for several years, Ilya isn't willing to leave his wife Masha (Nastya Seglia), while Nina doesn't want to break things off with her husband Nikita (Dmitry Shevchenko). Instead, Ilya and Nina meet as often as possible on the neutral ground of an inexpensive hotel, and while they clearly enjoy their sexual relationship, they also seem to find an emotional succor in one another they don't get from their spouses. The couple takes great pains to keep their romance a secret from their partners, but with the passage of time the emotion drain of living double lives takes a toll on Ilya and Nina, as well as their mates. Svyaz (aka Relations) was the first feature for director and screenwriter Avdotia Smirnova. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A family is confronted with an unexpected and troubling new arrival in this emotional drama from Russia. Yulik Krymov (Leonid Yarmolnik) is a scientist and author who shares his home with his wife Rita (Yelena Yakovleva) and their two children, Anya (Marianna Ilyina) and Igor (Artyom Shalimov). Their domestic calm is shattered one day when Yulik discovers he has a third child he never knew about -- Pavel (Daniil Spivakovsky), the product of a long-forgotten one-night stand 20 years ago. Pavel has recently arrived home after suffering severe injuries as a Russian soldier fighting in Chechnya; his mother can no longer care for him, and has decided it is Yulik's turn to mind his son. Physically scarred and emotionally ravaged, Pavel is hardly a comforting presence, and Igor makes no secret of his fear and distrust of the new arrival, but his younger sister, Anya, has a kinder heart and befriends the shattered soul. To Rita, however, Pavel is a reminder of Yulik's decades-old infidelity, and his presence drives a wedge between her and her husband. Meanwhile, Pavel's need for expensive surgery, his powerful delusions that Chechnyan soldiers are hiding in the attic, and his insistence that his best friend will be coming to visit soon add up to far more than the family is able to deal with. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Barak is a simple portrait of the inhabitants of an old barracks converted to a communal residential neighborhood in a provincial town in the Urals in 1953, during the postwar rebuilding following the death of Stalin. The community is almost self-contained, which sets an example for the lives and loves of ordinary people in the rest of the Soviet Union during a period of upheaval. Twenty-three year old Olga, the sole survivor of a family wiped out in the siege of Leningrad, is the latest arrival to the barracks, where she does not know anyone. Alexei, a militia man, lives with his son Burka and his girlfriend Claudia. Jewish Jora, an eccentric photographer-cum-clown, is a former victim of Stalin's purges. Friedrich is an ex-Nazi soldier married to a Russian. Guerka is an alcoholic dove breeder and a former Nazi collaborator. Polina is a pretentious Ukrainian and Karim the Tatar is her companion. Olga gradually adjusts herself to the circumstances, living each day with moments of joy, sorrow, and unexpected incidents. Director Valeri Ogorodnikov pays attention to the minutest details when drawing a colorful gallery of characters. Dream sequences are interspersed for dramatic highlights. Barak received the Silver Leopard at the 1999 Locarno International Film Festival, and Ogorodnikov received the Young Jury award. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi

In 1987, director Alla Surikova scored enormous success in her home country with Chelovek S Bulvara Kaputsinov, an engaging slapstick comedy about an idealistic film projectionist trying to introduce the Old West to the nascent art of motion pictures. This film, aptly named Choknutye / Crazy People, features another idealist, an Austrian engineer (Ulrich Pleitgen) who comes to 19th century Russia to build the first railroad. A group of aristocrats sees him as a direct threat to their thriving stagecoach business and they employ elaborate schemes to thwart his project. However, with the help of a dashing lieutenant (Nikolai Karachentsov), a double-dealing agent of the secret police (Leonid Yarmolnik), and a mysterious young woman named Maria (Olga Kabo), he manages to get the czar's approval. ~ Yuri German, Rovi

In this picaresque comedy, a Georgian boy with a Jewish stepbrother gets involved in an emigration mixup. Things are rough in present-day U.S.S.R., and when Yasha (Gerard Darmon) decides to take advantage of an open emigration visa to Israel being offered by the Russian government, and though his father and family are at first upset at the prospect of losing him, they finally accept the good sense of his decision. While accompanying his brother to the airport, younger stepbrother Merab (also Gerard Darmon) briefly holds Yasha's papers while he goes into a store to buy some things for his trip. Somehow, Merab winds up on the airplane to Vienna, minus luggage or any money. He tries to straighten things out at the Russian embassy, but gets treated as an imposter. So he flies on to Israel, where he tries the same thing. There, they think he is a KGB agent who is testing them, and once again he is sent away. With no other options, he gets involved in some shady dealings in Israel. Meanwhile, his now-desperate family is attempting to persuade the Israeli government to return this, the "wrong" boy, and have kidnapped an American tourist as a hostage. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
