One of the most popular African-American comedians of the late 1990s, TV star turned screen actor Jamie Foxx first became known for his many roles on Keenen Ivory Wayans' long-running comedy variety show In Living Color. Since then, Foxx has played both raucous and sensitive nice-guy roles in a number of films, and earned particular acclaim for his portrayal of a talented but egotistical quarterback in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday.Born Eric Bishop in the small town of Terrell, Texas, on December 13, 1967, Foxx was raised by his grandparents after his parents separated. He enjoyed a happy upbringing, going to church every day with his grandparents and excelling at everything from academics to music to football. During his teen years he had his first taste of the entertainment business as his church's choir director and music director, and also started his own R&B band. Foxx studied music while a student at the U.S. International University in San Diego; it was during his college days that he got his start as a stand-up comedian. Attending a comedy club one night with some friends, he was encouraged to take the stage and perform some impersonations, which proved incredibly popular with the audience. Foxx's enthusiastic reception led to his decision to move to L.A. and pursue a comedy career. At the age of 22 he was hired for In Living Color, and he subsequently landed a recurring role on Charles Dutton's sitcom Roc.
Foxx was ultimately given his own show in 1996; that same year, he appeared in a supporting role in The Truth About Cats and Dogs, which cast him as a friend of Ben Chaplin. He was also featured in the boxing satire The Great White Hype, and the following year he got star billing opposite fellow comedian Tommy Davidson in the poorly received comedy Booty Call. After playing a DJ in Ice Cube's The Players Club (1998), Foxx earned some of his best reviews to date for his role in Any Given Sunday (1999). He subsequently returned to straight comedy, starring in Antoine Fuqua's crime comedy Bait as an ex-con trying to mend his ways, and as a man caught in a convenience stored robbery in Held Up.
In 2001, Foxx was given an opportunity to again flex the dramatic chops he displayed in Any Given Sunday with a role as Drew Bundi Brown in Michael Mann's biopic Ali. Then, after a role in the barely seen 2003 Sylvester Stallone drama Shade, Foxx embarked on his busiest year yet. 2004 saw him star in no fewer than four films, the most noteworthy of them being the thriller Collateral. The tense summer flick not only saw Foxx again under the direction of Mann, but cast on an equal level with Hollywood uber-star Tom Cruise. His turn as a hapless cab driver who is forced into a menacing partnership slowly advancing Foxx's dramatic screen presence, the role served as proof to many that his talents extended well beyond what many may have suspected. When it was announced shortly thereafter that Foxx would be donning the trademark sunglasses to essay the role of legendary blues pianist Ray Charles in Director Taylor Hackford's eagerly anticipated biopic Ray, it was only a matter of time before audiences found out how deep Foxx's talents as an actor truly ran. So effective was Foxx in recreating Charles' unique style and unmistakable visage that many critics speculated an Oscar nomination may be in calling for the one-time funnyman turned dramatic powerhouse. When the star-studded evening in February did finally arrive and the envelope that would reveal the best actor of 2005 was breathlessly opened, Foxx did indeed take the prize -- raising already stratospheric expectations regarding his future career to a fever pitch.
Foxx subverted expectations by capitalizing on his Oscar win with an R&B album that garnered respectable reviews and solid sales. He returned to films in the summer action flop Stealth -- in a supporting role to would-be superstar Josh Lucas -- and appeared as a leader of men in Sam Mendes' Gulf War film Jarhead. In 2006 he reteamed with Michael Mann, starring as Tubbs in the big-screen adaptation of Miami Vice. Director Maxie Collier takes us inside the process as he selects his Paperchasers crew and travels across the United States, interviewing people making a living off hip-hop, from street rappers selling tapes out of their trunks, to clothing designers, a hairdresser, DJs, record producers, and recording artists. They're all out to make money, and Collier wants to learn how it is done. In Atlanta, the crew catch rap superstar Ludacris and his crew just months before they sign a record deal and blow up. Collier documents his crew's struggles to land interviews with media bigwigs like Rap-A-Lot's J. Prince and Def Jam founder Russell Simmons. Collier also captures the fluctuations in his personal relationships with producer Yvette Plummer, also the mother of his son, and soundman Marquez Edmond (aka "Marquez the Greatest"), as the pressures of making the film wear on the bare-bones crew. Jamie Foxx once again brilliantly demonstrates his acting chops as Stan "Tookie" Williams, the South Central Los Angeles native who, at the age of 17, co-founded the infamous Crips street gang. If one is to believe the script of this made-for-cable film, Williams hadn't intended the Crips to wallow in crime and violence; instead, he'd hoped that the gang would form a united front to protect his 'hood from other gangbangers. Needless to say, it didn't turn out that way, and within a few years of its 1971 formation, the Crips was the biggest and most powerful gang in the country, with branches in virtually every state. Ultimately, Williams is charged with murder and sentenced to San Quentin's death row in 1987. There he experiences an epiphany and becomes an advocate for peace, harmony, and tolerance, writing children's books that preach against the lure of street gangs. As the years roll by and the date of his execution draws closer, Williams manages to negotiate a peace between the Crips and their chief rivals, the Bloods, and even manages to receive three Nobel Prize nominations. Lynn Whitfield co-stars as Barbara Becnel, the crusading journalist who helped Williams see the light -- not so much to save his soul, but to prevent a similar fate from befalling her own son. Although considerable liberties are taken with the facts, Redemption: The Stan "Tookie" Williams Story neither glamorizes nor excuses its title character, nor the "gangsta" culture that he so enthusiastically embraced in his youth. His world heavyweight champion title thus stripped from him entirely for political reasons, the champ sets about to win back his crown, culminating in a legendary unification bout against George Foreman (Charles Shufford) in Zaire, dubbed the "Rumble in the Jungle." In his travels, Ali becomes a symbol of power to disenfranchised African-Americans everywhere and meets such luminaries as Malcolm X (Mario Van Peebles), Martin Luther King Jr. (LeVar Burton) and Maya Angelou (Martha Edgerton). In this action comedy, a crook trying to go straight finds himself lured back to crime by the police, without his even knowing it. When master criminals Jasper (Robert Pastorelli) and Bristol (Doug Hutchison) pull a heist that nets $40 million in gold but leaves behind several dead policemen, detective Edgar Clenteen (David Morse) pulls out all the stops to put the thief behind bars. Jasper is jailed and ends up sharing a cell with Alvin Sanders (Jamie Foxx), a habitual small-time criminal who was brought in after a bungled robbery of a seafood wholesaler. Jasper, who has a weak heart, suffers a heart attack in jail, and as he dies, he gives Alvin a message to pass along to his wife. Eager to track down Bristol, who still has the gold, Clenteen has Alvin secretly implanted with an experimental tracking device, and then lets him go free, while spreading the word on the street that Jasper told him where the gold was stashed shortly before his death. While Alvin makes an effort to start his life over and get a straight job, Clenteen and his staff are electronically following his every move, waiting for Bristol and his associates to track him down. In the fifth and final season of The Jamie Foxx Show, up-and-coming vocalist Jamie King (Jamie Foxx) has broken up with his girlfriend Fancy (Garcelle Beauvais) and has embarked upon a nightclub singing career -- though not as the partner of Nicole Evans (Rhona Bennett), the girl who caused his split with Fancy in the first place. As his career moves in fits and starts, Jamie begins missing Fancy, and by mid-season he has proposed marriage. As a wedding present, Jamie's Uncle Junior (Garrett Morris) and Aunt Helen (Ellia English) turn over 75 percent ownership of the King's Tower hotel to the engaged couple. This arrangement is not to the liking of Jamie's former roommate Braxton (Christopher B. Duncan), who as King's Tower's general manager had assumed he would take over the hotel once Junior and Helen retired. As it happens, however, the marriage may never come off: Fancy has been offered a fantastic job in New York, and there may be no room for matrimony in her life. In this fish-out-of-water comedy, Jamie Foxx plays a man named Michael Dawson, though he's confused for both Puff Daddy and Mike Tyson by the citizenry of the podunk southwest town that serves as the setting for Held Up. Road-tripping Michael and Rae (Nia Long) stop in for gas in Michael's new vintage roadster, but she grabs a ride to the airport with a truck full of cowboys after learning he blew more than 10,000 dollars earmarked for buying a home on the automobile. Moments later, Michael loses the car as well when a youth cons him out of the keys. Just when his day couldn't get any worse, Michael lands in the middle of a botched hold-up by amateurs trying to knock over the convenience store. All variety of local law enforcement, from the sheriff (Barry Corbin) to truckloads of unofficial shotgun-toting "deputies," quickly descends on the scene. Michael tries to sweet-talk the frightened gunman (Eduardo Yanez), befriend his fellow hostages (Sarah Paulson and John Cullum), and plan how to reach the airport before Rae's flight leaves, all while not getting shot by the hair triggers inside and outside the store. As season four of The Jamie Foxx Show gets under way, aspiring actor Jamie King (Jamie Foxx) and sexy hotel desk clerk Fancy Monroe (Garcelle Beauvais) have resumed their relationship -- leaving Fancy's former fiancé, Dr. Silas Landry, out in the cold (and out of the series). Elsewhere at the King's Tower Hotel in L.A., Jamie's Uncle Junior (Garrett Morris) and Aunt Helen (Ellia English) have decided to promote Fancy to director of sales, and the hotel's accountant, Braxton (Christopher B. Duncan), to general manager (hopefully, this takes some of the sting out the fact that Braxton has apparently broken up with his girlfriend Cameron). Sizing up his chances for showbiz success, Jamie resigns himself to a "civilian" job with an ad agency called Jingles 2000, where he meets several new series regulars: boss Bob Nelson (Blake Clark) and co-workers Nicole (Rhona Bennett), Phil (Alex Thomas), Mouse (Suli McCullough), and Curtis (Chris Spencer). Despite the fact that he has taken the job on the rebound, Jamie does well enough to be promoted to supervisor -- only to lose that position and his whole job when he is caught making a demo tape with company equipment. Fortunately, he has become close with Nicole, who likewise yearns to become a star. Teaming up with her for a Vegas act, Jamie is delighted that his career is at last getting somewhere. Oliver Stone takes on professional football, a sport whose grace and delicacy are a good match for his filmmaking style. Tony D'Amato (Al Pacino), the head coach of the Miami Sharks, won back-to-back championships four years ago. But new team owner Christina Pagniacci (Cameron Diaz) has little enthusiasm for the finer points of the game and is concerned only with the bottom line. The longtime strongman of Tony's team has been "Cap" Rooney (Dennis Quaid), a 39-year-old quarterback, but Christina balks at renewing his contract. When Cap is injured during a game, third-string rookie quarterback Willie Beaman (Jamie Foxx) goes on in his place and becomes a major star. But Beaman is mostly interested in fame and money, and he has little regard for Tony and his teammates. Season three of The Jamie Foxx Show ended as aspiring actor Jamie King (Jamie Foxx) bade farewell to his friends and loved ones at the King's Tower Hotel in Los Angeles, in preparation of a lengthy tour as the opening act for rappers K-Ci & JoJo. Alas, at the beginning of season three, Jamie is back in L.A. without a penny to his name, his big showbiz chance having blown up in his face when he had an argument with the two singers. Even worse, the love of Jamie's life, King's Tower desk clerk Fancy Monroe (Garcelle Beauvais) has started dating other men, resolving herself to the conclusion that her relationship with Jamie was doomed from the start (though they still remain friends). Ironically, Jamie's nerdish former roommate, accountant Braxton T. Hartnabrig (Christopher B. Duncan), is at long last enjoying a rather robust romantic life with his new girlfriend, Cameron Caldwell (Susan Wood), an attractive blond who works for a delivery service. As for Jamie's Aunt Helen (Ellia English) and Uncle Junior (Garrett Morris), their relationship remains as testy as ever -- though Junior is capable of expressing jealousy over Helen's mid-season cosmetic makeover. As the season winds down, Fancy has become seriously involved with Dr. Silas Landry (Alan F. Smith). He proposes, she accepts, a wedding date is set -- and then everything changes when Jamie and Fancy realize they're still in love with each other. ~ All Movie Guide

This "Odd Couple" relationship comes to an abrupt end when Jamie accidentally starts a fire in the apartment, forcing himself and Braxton to return, sadder but not a lot wiser, to King's Tower. The season ends as Jamie gets a job doing the opening act for the rap group K-Ci & JoJo, whom he met in time-honored sitcom fashion by bumping into their car. It's 3 a.m. -- do you know where your condoms are? That's one of the dilemmas befalling the characters in this raunchy comedy. Rushon (Tommy Davidson) is a mild-mannered Buppie who has been going out with his girlfriend Nikki (Tamala Jones) for about seven weeks; they seem to like each other well enough, but the relationship has been mainly platonic, and Nikki isn't so sure that she wants that to change. Rushon asks Nikki out to dinner, but Nikki wants to bring along her tart-tongued friend Lysterine (Viveca A. Fox). Rushon has to find a date for her, and he comes up with his rude-boy buddy Bunz (Jamie Foxx). Lysterine and Bunz soon hit it off, and, to Rushon's surprise, Nikki decides it's time for their relationship to move to the physical level. Only one problem: this is the '90s, and all parties involved want to be sure they're practicing safe sex. Former In Living Color regular and future Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx was the eponymous star of this long-running sitcom, one of the most popular and successful efforts of the fledgling WB network. The series' semi-autobiographical through line found Foxx cast as an aspiring actor named Jamie King, who in the first season traveled from his native Texas to Los Angeles, hoping to achieve stardom. To save money, Jamie accepted an invitation to live rent-free at King's Tower, a once-prominent but now rundown hotel managed by his chronic-gambler Uncle Junior (Garrett Morris) and his no-nonsense Aunt Helen (Ellia English). In exchange for his room, Jamie was expected to do a variety of odd jobs around the hotel, which brought him into contact with sexy front-desk clerk Francesca "Fancy" Monroe (Garcelle Beauvais), persnickety hotel accountant Braxton P. Hartnabrig (Christopher P. Duncan), and during the initial ten episodes, klutzy bellhop Dennis (Andy Berman). In the course of the series, Jamie and Fancy fell in love, though their romance ran a dizzying gamut of spectacular heights and doleful depths, with numerous breakups, reconciliations, and "outside" affairs for both parties. After a particularly devastating career setback (he had been hired and fired as an opening act for the rap group K-Ci & JoJo), Jamie went to work for Jingles 2000 an ad agency which shipped out commercial jingles at the outset of season four. Here he met a whole new complement of series regulars, including his boss Bob (Blake Clark) and fellow employees Phil (Alex Thomas), Mouse (Suli McCullough), Curtis (Curtis Spencer), and Nicole (Rhona Bennett). Though he'd eventually be sacked at Jingles 2000, he managed to launch a nightclub singing act with Nicole, a professional relationship that became intensely personal by the end of the season. Ultimately choosing Fancy over Nicole, Jamie developed a solo singing act, but at series' end, he had agreed to assume control of King's Tower -- and to finally marry Fancy.
