Gerard Depardieu and Jean Reno headline this comedic chase film about a pair of escaped convicts with two very different goals. Ruby (Reno) is a criminal with real gusto; in addition to stealing a crime boss' wife, he also made off with most of the gangster's cash. He almost got away with it, too. Now serving hard time for his bold crime, Ruby runs into Quentin (Depardieu), a desperate inmate with a brilliant escape plan. Before long, Ruby and Quentin are back on the outside. But they're hardly free; the cops are searching high and low for the fleeing convicts, and Ruby has a high price on his head. All Quentin wants is to maintain a low profile and open a coffee-house, but Ruby won't be happy until he's taken revenge on the criminal who had him incarcerated. This French thriller begins with a flashback to a small village dance where a six-year-old girl is kidnapped and killed. Seventeen years later the murder remains unsolved. The girl's parents Caroline and Chris have gone on with separate lives Caroline remarried and had another daughter while Chris became an alcoholic. The two are thrown back together when each begin receiving strange messages that imply their daughter has returned from the dead for vengeance. They contact a police detective (the lover of Caroline's best friend) who finds the case intriguing and decides to reopen it. Nicole is a nurse, with a fiancee doing his military service, who lives at home with her mother. One night, while returning home on her motorcycle, she is forced off the road by four men driving a delivery van, and she is raped. Afterward, she is secretly sent by her family to a hospital to recover. However, she is determined to discover the meaning of this awful event and presses charges against the men, who prove to be very ordinary, and not the monsters she had imagined them to be.
