Kirk Fogg Movies
Former Legends of the Hidden Temple host Kirk Fogg goes from Nickelodeon game show to gritty street thriller as the director and star of this stylish mystery about a drug-addicted, former undercover cop searching for his missing girlfriend in the dangerous Los Angeles underworld. Porter (Fogg) has just been involved in a drug deal gone horribly awry, and now he and girlfriend Rachel (Sarah Lahti) are attempting to lie low in a warehouse currently being used as a porno studio. When Porter learns that Rachel has cut a deal with the sleazy producer who runs the studio in order to bankroll the couple's flight from the city, he shamefully numbs himself with drugs as Rachel turns tricks in front of the camera for cash. Later, Porter makes a hazed-out attempt to prevent his girlfriend from completely debasing herself that ends with him blacking out and being left for dead on the banks of the L.A. River. Though he attempts to go to the police in hopes that they will help him locate Rachel, the officers all know about Porter's sordid history and fail to grasp the true gravity of the situation. Realizing that in order to save Rachel's life he will have to go it alone, strung-out Porter steals a car and hits the streets in a frantic bid to rescue his girlfriend before she becomes another inner-city statistic. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Season one of Veronica Mars finds both the title character (Kristen Bell) and her ex-sheriff father, Keith (Enrico Colantoni), regarded as lepers in the affluent community of Neptune -- and it's all because Keith made public his suspicion that Jake Kane (Kyle Secor), the town's richest man, killed his own daughter (and Veronica's best friend), Lilly (Amanda Seyfried). Hoping to find Lilly's murderer and redeem her father's reputation, 17-year-old Veronica assists Keith in his efforts to run a private detective agency -- and while in school, she tirelessly crusades for justice as a reporter for the student newspaper. Early in the season, Veronica finds herself with two loyal allies when she protects nerdy new kid Wallace (Percy Daggs III) from school bully Weevil (Francis Capra) -- and then, in the spirit of "fair and balanced" dispersion of justice, she clears Weevil from an unfounded charge of theft. Meanwhile, several of Veronica's fellow Neptunians display bizarre behavior suggesting that they know more about Lilly's death than they're willing to admit, notably Lilly's seriously disturbed brother, Duncan (Teddy Dunn), and his wealthy, arrogant best friend, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring). Also, Veronica finds time to delve into the mystery of her mother, Lianne (Corinne Bohrer), who for apparently no reason had abandoned her family a year earlier. And all the while, Veronica does the "Nancy Drew" bit, 21st century style, using her acute detecting skills to restore shattered reputations, expose the dangers of cult worship, and gather vital clues pertinent to kidnappings, switched-at-birth cases, instances of alleged sexual harassment, and illegal fight clubs. The season ends with the episode "Leave It to Beaver," in which Veronica at long last has the opportunity to solve Lilly's murder -- but in so doing she may betray the trust of one near and dear to her. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Processed in old-fashioned 3-strip Technicolor (director Richard Haines had to take the film stock all the way to China where one of the few remaining Technicolor labs can be found) and featuring plenty of inside jokes for film buffs, Space Avenger pays gory tribute to 1950s B-movies. Though primarily a sci-fi films, the plot draws from a variety of the era's popular low-budget genres including violent gangster films and exploitation outings. The story centers on a pair of alien fugitives who crash land on Earth after escaping from an intergalactic prison. Resembling big slimy iguanas, they disguise themselves by leaping into the bodies of human teenagers so they can head off to search for the materials needed to fix their ship. Quickly discovered that Americans in the 1930s lack the technology they need, so the vile creatures return to their ship to hibernate until human technology advances. Fifty years pass. Construction workers are digging a basement for a new building when they inadvertently unearth the spacecraft. The aliens are not terribly pleased and so embark upon a terrible killing spree. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
