Go behind the scenes of the 2007 Oklahoma State Penitentiary Rodeo to see how a group of convict cowgirls risk life and limb for the thrill of riding a bucking bull. Oklahoma has the highest female incarceration rate in the entire United States. In 2006, female inmates from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary were permitted to participate in the prison rodeo for first time since the annual event was launched in 1940. It's half Wild West show, and half coliseum-esque spectacle, and also the very last rodeo of its kind. Some inmates, like Danny Liles, have been participating in the annual event for over a decade. The rodeo affords them a brief respite from prison life, but the risks are high even for the toughest male inmates. As the female inmates file in to take part in their very first rodeo, the spectators and guards wait with baited breath to see just what happens when the gate goes up and all hell breaks loose. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Long the source of speculation amongst loyal Flaming Lips fans, this offbeat tale of the first Martian colony and the strange events surrounding the birth of the first extraterrestrial human child went into production in 2001 with band frontman Wayne Coyne pulling double duty as both director and star. Sometime in the distant future, man has conquered Mars. Shortly after reaching the Red Planet, however, the space program went into decline, effectively stranding the astronauts millions of miles from their home planet. As Christmas draws near and Major Syrtis (Steven Drozd) begins drawing up plans for the big pageant, the crew is struggling to convert old spaceships into living quarters and the confidence among the scientists is beginning to wane. The first colonist baby is set to be born at the stroke of midnight on Christmas, a symbolic testament to the beginning of a new civilization. Unfortunately, a number of crew members have committed suicide, including the man who was supposed to play Santa Clause at the big celebration. Into this alien chaos arrives a mysterious Martian (Coyne). A strange figure who seeks to both inspire and assist the struggling astronauts, the Martian is quickly recruited to take over the role of Santa Clause in the upcoming pageant. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Award-winning filmmaker Ron Mann (Grass, Comic Book Confidential) investigates the miraculous world of fungi with this documentary shot largely at the Telluride Mushroom Festival in Colorado. It was during a conversation with his friend Jim Jarmusch that Mann first learned of the bizarre sub-culture surrounding the mushroom, and once his interest was peaked there was no turning back. Some of the oldest and largest living organisms on the planet are fungi, but where did mushrooms come from, and could they hold secrets that we've yet to discover? Recently, a new breed of maverick scientists have made the claim that mushrooms possess the power to cleanse sites corroded by toxins, and that they could be used as a "clean" pesticide among other things. By traveling to the Telluride Mushroom Festival and speaking with festival president Gary Lincoff, as well as numerous other mycophiles (mushroom aficionados) who frequent the event, Mann reveals why the popular fungus has emerged to become one of our greatest mysteries. A neo-psychedelic soundtrack by The Flaming Lips and campy clips from such features as Attack of the Mushroom People keeps the mood whimsical as Mann explores every wonderful facet of the mushroom kingdom. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

For their documentary The Creek Runs Red, co-directors Bradley Beesley, James Payne and Julianna Brannum travel to Picher, Oklahoma, one of the most environmentally unsound of all American communities, where the land and water are intolerably bilious and the town's primary source of economic sustenance - a zinc and lead mining company - skipped town ages ago. Amid this depressing backdrop, the filmmakers unveil a single bizarre truth: residents feel uniformly resistant to the idea of leaving. Brannum, Beesley and Payne use screen time to both chart the growing environmental disaster that belies the town, and raise penetrating questions about the locals' seemingly inexplicable reluctance to move elsewhere. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Filmmaker Mike Hill profiles one of the skateboarding world's most revolutionary figures in this documentary tracing the life and career of World Industries founder Steve Rocco. Founded in 1989, World Industries made waves throughout the skateboarding industry by ambushing the corporate world to re-write the rules of the game and usher in a refreshing new era of companies that were owned and operated by skaters. While many thought it could never be done, Rocco accomplished the formidable feat with a little help from such talented friends as Rodney Mullen, Jason Lee, Mark Gonzalez, Natas Kaupas, Spike Jonze, and Jeff Tremaine. A cultural revolution that changed the public perception of skateboarding from that of a passing teenage fad to a thriving anti-authoritarian counterculture, the rise of World Industries ultimately resulted in the creation of some of the most unlikely cult heroes in contemporary sports. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Fishing enthusiasts will spend hours debating the virtues of different rods, reels, lures, and types of bait, but there is a small but hardy group of anglers who have figured out a way to get by without any gear at all. This documentary takes a look at the phenomenon of "noodling," in which a fisherman literally takes a deep breath, ducks under the water, and snatches a fish with his bare hands. Needless to say, it's not a method that works for everyone, and a few noodlers have discovered the hard way that what they thought was a fish turned out to be a snapping turtle or a beaver (which fend off sportsmen by biting back), but the sport has attracted a handful of ardent supporters, and director Bradley Beesley features interviews with several of them, as well as offering footage of a number of veteran noodlers in action. Okie Noodling also features an original musical score by the noted alternative rock band the Flaming Lips. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
